Aurora’s breath was still uneven when Killian pulled away, his face twisting as if the moment they shared had burned him. The air between them was thick with tension, electric and suffocating. Aurora could still feel the ghost of his lips on hers, the heat of his touch lingering on her skin. But the second he stepped back, everything changed. His silver eyes darkened—not with desire, but with something colder. A wall slammed down between them, severing whatever fragile connection had just formed. “That was a mistake,” he said, his voice clipped, distant. Aurora’s heart clenched, but she refused to let the sting show on her face. “A mistake?” she echoed, her tone dangerously soft. Killian’s jaw tightened. “Forget it happened.” Forget? As if it hadn’t just rattled her to her core? As if it hadn’t sent something wild and untamed surging through her veins? She let out a bitter laugh, shaking her head. “You really are a coward.” Killian’s expression darkened. “Watch your mouth.” “No,” she snapped, stepping closer. “I’m done watching my mouth. You kiss me, and the next second, you push me away. What the hell do you want from me, Killian?” His hands curled into fists at his sides. “Nothing. You mean nothing to me.” A cold, sharp pain stabbed through her chest, but she swallowed it down. She would not break in front of him. “Good,” she said flatly. “Because you mean nothing to me either.” She turned on her heel and stormed out, slamming the door behind her. Killian stood frozen, his heart pounding. His wolf snarled inside him, furious, restless. He had just made a terrible mistake—again. His body still burned with the memory of her lips, of her scent filling his lungs. He ran a hand through his hair, cursing under his breath. He couldn’t afford to be weak. Yet, for the first time in his life, he wasn’t sure if he was strong enough to resist her. Aurora reached her quarters, her chest tight with frustration. She paced the room, her fingers trembling slightly as she brushed them over her lips. Despite everything, despite his cold words, she had felt something. Something real. And that scared her more than anything. She clenched her fists, forcing herself to push the thoughts aside. She would not be toyed with. She would make herself stronger, so strong that Killian’s rejection wouldn’t matter. Somewhere else in the pack house, Davina’s lips curled into a satisfied smirk as she heard whispers of Aurora’s growing defiance. She had expected this. Siara wasn’t the only one watching. The entire pack was beginning to see Aurora as more than just an unwanted servant. That was dangerous. But it was also an opportunity. She moved carefully, weaving through the halls, stopping when she caught sight of Siara standing at the edge of the training grounds. Siara’s nails dug into her palms as she watched Killian from a distance. He had been restless ever since Aurora arrived. That girl was a problem. Davina’s voice was smooth, a snake’s whisper in the wind. “She’s getting under his skin.” Siara stiffened, turning her sharp gaze toward her. “You don’t need to tell me what I already know.” “She needs to be put in her place,” Davina continued, keeping her tone casual. “Before she takes everything from you.” Siara’s lips pressed into a thin line. She didn’t trust Davina. They weren’t friends. But they had a common enemy. “I handle my own problems,” Siara said coolly before walking away. Davina watched her go, a knowing smile playing on her lips. Let Siara fight her battles. It wouldn’t matter in the end. Aurora would fall—one way or another. Later that night, Aurora was tasked with delivering a message to one of the pack warriors. She didn’t question it, even though something felt off. The path through the woods was eerily silent as she moved, her senses sharp. Then, just as she neared the training ground, she felt it—something shifting in the air. Before she could react, shadows moved around her. Four warriors stepped into view, their faces unreadable, but their intent clear. “Out for a little stroll?” one of them sneered. Aurora’s muscles tensed. “Move.” They didn’t. “You don’t belong here,” another growled. “You think just because the Alpha lets you breathe the same air as us, you matter?” Aurora exhaled slowly, her heartbeat steady. She had fought before, but she knew she was outnumbered. Still, she wouldn’t back down. The first one lunged, and she moved fast. Her foot slammed into his stomach, sending him staggering back. But another grabbed her arm, yanking her backward. She twisted, slamming her elbow into his jaw, but the impact sent a jolt of pain up her arm. Another warrior tackled her, forcing her onto the ground. Her vision blurred for a moment as pain exploded in her side. She kicked out, managing to knock him off, but before she could rise, a heavy boot pressed down on her shoulder. A cruel chuckle rang above her. “You’re stubborn, I’ll give you that,” the leader murmured. “But that won’t save you.” Before the final blow could land, a furious snarl tore through the night. The pressure on her shoulder disappeared as her attacker was ripped away from her. A blur of motion—a flash of silver eyes and a beast barely contained. Killian moved like a storm, his fury unrelenting. The warriors didn’t stand a chance. They were strong, but Killian was merciless. Bones cracked, bodies hit the ground. A warning growl rumbled through the night, deadly and final. When the dust settled, Killian stood among the fallen warriors, his breath ragged. His silver eyes locked onto Aurora, his expression unreadable. His hands were shaking. He had almost lost control. He had almost lost her. He stalked toward her, grabbing her roughly by the arm. “No one touches what’s mine,” he growled, his voice thick with something raw, something possessive. Aurora flinched, but she didn’t back down. “I don’t belong to you.” Killian’s grip tightened for a fraction of a second before he let her go. He exhaled sharply, running a hand over his face. He had seen it. The faint glow on her wrist. His heart pounded as realization sank in. She wasn’t just anyone. There was something about her, something even she didn’t understand. And now, he was going to find out. .
