Phase Two

801 Words
Every phone in the room vibrated at once. The alert glowed on each screen. PROJECT PHOENIX HAS NOT ENDED. PHASE TWO BEGINS TODAY. No sender. No logo. No traceable source. A countdown appeared beneath the message. 23:59:59 Twenty-four hours. Then it began ticking down. ⸻ The room fell into tense silence. Sarah Kane was the first to speak. “This isn’t Arthur.” Adrian looked up. “How can you be sure?” “Arthur always wanted control through secrecy. Whoever sent this message wants the world to watch.” Dr. Eleanor Hayes stared at the countdown with quiet dread. “I prayed I’d never see those words again.” Nadia turned to her. “What is Phase Two?” The old woman’s face paled. “It was never supposed to happen.” ⸻ Dr. Hayes reached beneath her blanket and produced a worn leather notebook. Its cover was stamped with a faded phoenix. “I kept this hidden for thirty years.” She opened it to a page marked PHASE TWO. “There were two versions of Project Phoenix.” “Phase One replaced identities.” “Phase Two erased them completely.” Nadia frowned. “What does that mean?” “It means everyone connected to the original identities…” “…would disappear.” ⸻ Sarah leaned over the notebook. “Disappear how?” Dr. Hayes swallowed. “They would be declared dead.” “Their records would vanish.” “Their bank accounts would close.” “Their DNA files would be destroyed.” “Their existence would be rewritten.” Adrian understood immediately. “They’re trying to erase every survivor.” Dr. Hayes nodded. “And anyone who can expose them.” ⸻ Nadia looked at the rescued children resting in another room. “They’re coming for all of us.” “No,” Dr. Hayes replied. “They’re coming for you first.” ⸻ A loud knock echoed through the nursing home. Everyone froze. Three slow knocks. Then silence. The nurse peeked through the curtains. “There are two visitors.” “Police?” Sarah asked. The nurse shook her head. “They’re wearing black suits.” Adrian drew his pistol. “They found us.” ⸻ The front door opened before anyone could reach it. Two strangers walked inside. A man. A woman. Neither carried visible weapons. Both wore white gloves. The woman smiled politely. “Good morning.” “We’re here for Emily Hart.” Sarah raised her rifle. “Take another step and you won’t leave.” The man calmly placed a sealed envelope on the floor. “We’re not here to fight.” “We’re here to deliver an invitation.” He slid the envelope toward Nadia. Across the front were the words: To the Last Hart. ⸻ Inside was a single train ticket. Destination: Ravensgate Island. Departure: 8:00 PM. Tucked behind it was a handwritten note. The answers your father never found are waiting where Project Phoenix truly began. Signed with a single letter: M ⸻ Dr. Hayes gasped. “No…” Adrian looked at her. “You know who ‘M’ is?” She nodded slowly. “I hoped she was dead.” “Who is she?” Dr. Hayes whispered, “Marianne.” “The founder.” Nadia frowned. “I thought Arthur founded the Custodians.” Dr. Hayes shook her head. “Arthur built an empire.” “Marianne imagined it.” ⸻ Before anyone could ask another question, the television turned on again. A reporter stood outside a secure government hospital. “We’ve received confirmation that the unidentified survivor recovered from yesterday’s explosion has escaped custody.” A grainy security image appeared. It showed Vivian, still wearing hospital clothes, running through a corridor. Then the footage froze. Someone had written across the screen in red: DON’T GO TO THE ISLAND. The broadcast abruptly ended. ⸻ Sarah looked at the train ticket. Adrian looked at Nadia. Dr. Hayes closed her notebook. For the first time since this nightmare began, they all wanted different things. Sarah wanted to destroy the island. Adrian wanted to protect Nadia. Dr. Hayes wanted to keep the past buried. But Nadia… Nadia looked at the ticket and made her decision. “If my father died chasing the truth…” She folded the ticket and slipped it into her jacket. “…then I’m going to finish the journey.” Outside, thunder rolled across the sky as the countdown continued. 23:11:08 The race against Phase Two had begun. End of Episode 17. Cliffhanger As everyone prepares to leave, the little girl once known as Number Twenty-One quietly hands Nadia a folded drawing. It shows Ravensgate Island… and a lighthouse. Beneath the lighthouse, written in childish handwriting, are four chilling words: “I was born here.”
