The room was silent.
No one spoke after the gunshot echoed from the television.
Nadia stared at the blank screen, unable to blink.
“If that was the real Vivian…” she whispered, “…then who was the woman on the news?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“I don’t know.”
It was the first time Nadia had heard uncertainty in his voice.
For years, Adrian had always seemed one step ahead.
Now, someone else was writing the rules.
⸻
Margaret pulled an old projector from a dusty cabinet.
“If Vivian is gone,” she said quietly, “then there’s only one thing left that can explain everything.”
She inserted a reel labeled:
PROJECT PHOENIX – CLASSIFIED
The projector flickered to life.
A grainy recording filled the wall.
A man in a white lab coat appeared.
His face was hidden in shadow.
He began speaking.
“Project Phoenix was created to preserve power.”
The image shifted to photographs of children.
Dozens of them.
Boys and girls between the ages of four and ten.
Each child wore a numbered tag around their neck.
Nadia’s stomach turned.
The narrator continued.
“Influential families require heirs. But bloodlines can be… inconvenient.”
Another image appeared.
Doctors.
Government officials.
Judges.
Business leaders.
Standing together.
Smiling.
“They replaced children,” Nadia whispered.
Margaret nodded.
“They erased one child’s identity…”
“…and gave them another.”
⸻
The next slide appeared.
Subject 27
A photograph of a little girl.
Dark hair.
A butterfly necklace.
Nadia’s breath caught.
“It’s me.”
Below the photograph were two names.
Original Identity: Emily Hart
Assigned Identity: Nadia Brooks
The room spun.
“I’ve been living someone else’s life.”
Adrian spoke softly.
“No.”
“You’ve been living the life they wanted you to have.”
⸻
Suddenly, another file appeared on the screen.
Subject 03
Photograph:
Vivian Cole.
Original Identity:
UNKNOWN
Margaret frowned.
“There it is again.”
“What?”
“No birth records.”
“No family.”
“No history.”
Adrian folded his arms.
“Vivian wasn’t assigned a new identity.”
Margaret looked at him.
“She was the first.”
⸻
Before anyone could respond, the projector clicked again.
A final video began playing.
This one was different.
It had been recorded in secret.
The camera shook violently.
Someone was running.
Heavy breathing filled the speakers.
Then a familiar face appeared.
Daniel Hart.
Nadia’s father.
He looked terrified.
“If anyone finds this recording…”
He glanced over his shoulder.
“…they’re already too late.”
Nadia stepped closer.
Tears streamed down her face.
It was the first time she had ever seen her father’s face.
Daniel continued.
“They’ve discovered Emily.”
“They know who she is.”
“They’ll never stop hunting her.”
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this…”
“…Emily…”
“…I’m sorry.”
The recording suddenly cut to static.
Then, for less than a second—
A reflection appeared in a broken mirror behind Daniel.
A woman.
Watching him.
Margaret gasped.
“It can’t be…”
Adrian froze.
The woman in the reflection was unmistakable.
Vivian Cole.
⸻
“But…” Nadia whispered.
“The video was recorded the night my father died.”
Adrian nodded slowly.
“Which means Vivian was there.”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
She rewound the footage frame by frame.
The reflection became clearer.
The woman’s face wasn’t frightened.
It was calm.
Almost… satisfied.
Margaret whispered,
“She wasn’t trying to save Daniel.”
“She was watching him die.”
⸻
A heavy thud echoed above them.
Everyone looked up.
Footsteps.
Dozens of them.
The secret archive had been discovered.
A booming voice echoed through the ceiling.
“This is your only warning!”
“You have sixty seconds to surrender.”
Adrian immediately unplugged the projector.
Margaret grabbed several files and stuffed them into a backpack.
Nadia picked up the flash drive.
“Where do we go?”
Adrian looked toward the only exit.
“The emergency tunnel.”
Margaret didn’t move.
“There isn’t enough time.”
Adrian understood instantly.
His face fell.
“No…”
Margaret smiled sadly.
“Someone has to stay behind.”
She pressed an old brass key into Nadia’s hand.
“Whatever happens…”
“…don’t let them finish Project Phoenix.”
Nadia shook her head.
“I’m not leaving you.”
Margaret gently touched her cheek.
“You already lost one family.”
“You don’t need to lose another.”
She locked the archive door from the inside.
Adrian grabbed Nadia’s arm.
“We have to go!”
As they disappeared into the narrow escape tunnel, Nadia looked back one last time.
Margaret stood alone in the archive, surrounded by decades of evidence.
She closed her eyes.
Then smiled.
A deafening explosion shook the earth.
The tunnel collapsed behind them.
Dust filled the air.
Nadia screamed.
“Margaret!”
No answer came.
Only silence.
End of Episode 8.
Cliffhanger
As Adrian and Nadia stumble out of the tunnel into the moonlight, they find a black envelope waiting on the hood of their car.
On the front, written in elegant handwriting, are the words:
“Welcome home, Emily.”
