Chapter 10: The Enemy – Episode 4 The room was colder than Eva had anticipated, the air thick with an unsettling tension that hung between her and Marco. She had heard his name before, in passing, but nothing that explained why he was so important—or why Alessio had brought her here. His gaze was like a shadow that fell over her, sharp and assessing, making her feel as though she was being measured, tested. She took a step back, her posture rigid, her every instinct screaming at her to be cautious, to be ready. Marco’s smile didn’t reach his eyes, and the silence stretched out long enough to make her uncomfortable. Alessio stood beside her, his presence solid and grounding. "Eva," he said, his voice steady, "Marco is someone who can help us understand what's really at stake. He's... he's an ally." "An ally?" Eva repeated, her tone skeptical. "How can I trust him? How can I trust anyone in this world?" Marco's smile deepened, a knowing look flickering across his face. "Trust is a rare commodity, Eva," he said smoothly, his voice like velvet, "but in this case, I don’t expect you to trust me—not yet." Alessio’s gaze flickered toward Marco, something passing between them, an understanding, perhaps, or an unspoken agreement. "Marco has information," Alessio continued, "the kind of information that could change everything. It’s about your family... and why you’re so important in all of this." Eva felt a sharp pang in her chest at the mention of her family. It had been days since she’d first learned the depth of the betrayal. She had tried to push the painful truth out of her mind, but it seemed to haunt her at every turn—her father’s secret deals, the debts, the manipulations. It was hard to believe that everything she had grown up trusting had been built on lies. She focused on Marco, trying to remain calm, despite the churning unease in her gut. "What do you want from me?" she asked, her voice low but steady. Marco chuckled softly, a sound that didn't quite reach his eyes. "What do I want? I want the same thing as you, Eva. Answers." Her heart thudded in her chest at his words, but she didn’t allow herself to show fear. "I’m done with games," she said, her voice sharp. "Tell me what’s really going on." Marco’s smile faltered, but only for a moment. He exchanged another glance with Alessio, who didn’t react—his eyes remained steady, unblinking. "We can’t give you all the answers at once," Marco said, the edge to his tone suddenly gone. "But we can show you the first step. The rest will come in time. The truth isn’t something that can be revealed all at once." Eva shook her head, frustration boiling within her. "I don’t want pieces. I want the whole thing. Now." For a brief moment, it seemed as though Marco considered her words. Then, he finally spoke. "Very well. Your father, Eva, was involved in more than just simple deals. The debts were only part of it. There was a pact—one that binds your family to a much larger, much darker network of power. A network that extends beyond your father’s reach. And now that your family is no longer in power, the debt falls to you." Eva’s mind raced as the implications of his words sank in. Her father’s betrayal, the lies she had been raised on, they were only the surface. "A pact?" she repeated. "What kind of pact?" Marco took a step closer to her, his expression serious. "A pact with people who control more than just businesses, more than just this city. They control entire sectors of society—politics, finance, crime. They pull strings from the shadows, and they’ve been watching you, Eva, long before you even knew who Alessio was." The weight of his words hit her like a physical blow. She felt her knees weaken, but she stayed upright, refusing to show weakness. "Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?" she demanded. Alessio spoke for the first time in what felt like an eternity. "We couldn’t. There’s more to the story, and revealing everything now would put you in danger. We need to be careful, Eva. If we move too fast, we could all lose everything." Her mind swirled with confusion and fear. Everything she thought she knew—her family, her life—was a lie. There was a secret world out there, one that had been controlling her family for years, and now it was her turn to inherit it. She felt trapped, like a pawn in a game she didn’t understand, and no matter how much she fought, there was no escape. "I can’t do this," she muttered, the words slipping out before she could stop them. "I don’t want any part of this. I just want to go home." Alessio’s eyes softened, but his voice remained firm. "There’s no going back, Eva. You are already part of this world. Whether you like it or not, you’re caught up in the same web your father wove." Marco spoke then, his voice calm and steady. "Alessio is right. You may not want to accept it, but you don’t have a choice. You’ll never be able to go back to the life you knew. It’s gone. This world is your reality now." Eva clenched her fists at her sides, struggling to keep the tears at bay. She was alone in this, with no one to trust—except Alessio, and he was as much a part of the system that had trapped her as anyone else. "Then what do I do now?" she asked, her voice small, the weight of everything pressing down on her chest. Marco’s gaze softened, just slightly. "You fight. You take control of your own fate. You don’t let them dictate who you are or what you become." "Fight," she echoed, tasting the bitter word. She had fought before, but this was different. She had no idea who the enemy really was. And every step she took from here on would only lead her deeper into their world, a world where she no longer had any say. Alessio stepped forward, his presence grounding her. "We’ll help you. I’ll help you. But you have to trust me. We need you to understand this, Eva. Everything we’ve been doing—everything we’ve been showing you—is to prepare you for what's coming." Eva looked between Alessio and Marco, her mind spinning. She wanted to scream, to run, to escape everything that was happening, but deep down, she knew that wasn’t an option. She was already in too deep. The choice was no longer hers to make. For the first time, she allowed herself to truly see Alessio—not as the enemy, not as the man who had trapped her in this life—but as a partner in this dangerous game. "Then show me," she said, her voice trembling but resolute. "Show me what to do." Marco smiled, and this time, it was a genuine smile. "Good. That’s the first step." --- Later that night, as the weight of the conversation settled within her, Eva found herself once again standing on the balcony, the city sprawled out before her. She tried to grasp what had happened, tried to piece together the fragments of truth that had been thrown at her, but it was too much. Every new piece of information felt like another chain, wrapping tighter and tighter around her. Alessio came up behind her, his presence familiar and yet foreign. "Are you okay?" he asked quietly, his voice low and filled with something she couldn’t place. "I don’t know," she replied, her eyes not leaving the horizon. "I don’t know what to think anymore." He stood beside her, the silence between them heavy, but not uncomfortable. "The truth is a dangerous thing, Eva. Once you know it, you can’t unlearn it. But it’s also the only thing that can set you free." Eva turned to face him, her expression unreadable. "And what about you? What’s your truth?" Alessio met her gaze, and for a moment, she saw something there—vulnerability, a crack in the armor he had built around himself. "My truth is that I’m doing everything I can to protect you, Eva. And I’m not going to stop." She looked away, the weight of his words sinking in, but still unsure of where they would lead her. She had no answers, no way of knowing what would happen next. But for the first time since this whole nightmare had started, Eva allowed herself to wonder—was it possible that, somewhere in all of this, there was a chance for her to take control again?
