Chapter 4: The War Within

Chapter 4: The War Within Eva sat in the dimly lit room, her fingers tracing invisible patterns on the cold marble surface of the table. The weight of her captivity was pressing down on her, suffocating her thoughts. Alessio had given her a glimpse of the outside world, but it had been nothing more than a cruel tease, a reminder of what she could not have. She knew now that escape was not a matter of force—it was a matter of patience. Alessio had proven time and time again that he was always one step ahead. He anticipated her moves before she even made them. But Eva had something he didn’t: the will to survive. He might control the walls around her, but he couldn’t control the fire burning within her. Days passed in slow agony, each one blending into the next. But then, a shift. A small detail, but one she noticed instantly. The guards stationed outside her door were fewer. There were moments when she was left alone for longer than usual. It wasn’t much, but it was enough. And then, the night came. Eva waited until the mansion was swallowed by silence. The heavy weight of midnight made everything slower, quieter. She moved with careful precision, slipping out of her room and into the hallways. She had memorized the guards’ patterns, their routes, their blind spots. Every step was a battle against her own fear. She made it to the back entrance, her heart hammering so loudly she was sure someone would hear. She reached for the door— And a hand wrapped around her wrist. Her body reacted before her mind could catch up. She spun, striking out, but her attack was intercepted with ease. The familiar scent of leather and cologne filled her senses. Alessio. His grip tightened, but his voice was eerily calm. “Going somewhere?” Eva refused to cower. “Let me go.” A slow smirk curved his lips. “You already know that’s not going to happen.” Anger burned in her chest, but before she could retaliate, Alessio yanked her forward, pulling her flush against him. The sudden closeness sent a shiver down her spine. “I warned you,” he murmured, his voice low, dangerous. “I told you what would happen if you tried to run.” Her breath was shallow. “Then do it. Punish me. Lock me away. It doesn’t matter. I will never stop fighting you.” Something dark flickered in his eyes, but instead of rage, there was something else. Amusement. Interest. A challenge. “I don’t want to break you, Eva.” His fingers ghosted along her jawline. “I want you to see the truth.” She shoved him away with all her strength. “The truth? That you think you own me?” Alessio exhaled, stepping back, his expression unreadable. “I think we’ve both been at war with ourselves, Eva.” She froze. It was the first time he had said something that felt… honest. Real. But honesty didn’t change anything. “I’ll never be yours,” she whispered. A shadow crossed his features, but he nodded. “We’ll see.” With that, he turned and walked away, leaving her standing there, heart pounding, fists clenched. The war within her raged on.
