Episode 5: A Desperate Breakthrough Emma Carter sat on her couch, gripping the ominous note left behind by her intruder. “Stop now, or you’re next.” Someone had been inside her home. Someone had gone through her files. And someone wanted her to be afraid. She wasn’t. Instead, fury burned through her veins. They had killed her only lead in cold blood, erased Rachel Dawson from existence, and now they were trying to scare her into backing down. Not a chance. She pulled out her phone and dialed a number she hadn’t called in years. Ben Whitaker, an ex-FBI analyst turned underground journalist, someone who had helped her on past cases when official channels failed. The line rang twice before he answered. “Emma?” His voice was groggy, like she’d woken him up. “I thought you were done with me.” “Yeah, well, I don’t have the luxury of picking my allies right now.” Ben sighed. “What kind of trouble are you in?” “The kind where people die and leave no trace behind.” That got his attention. “I’m listening.” Emma wasted no time, filling him in on Rachel’s disappearance, the list of missing names, the ambush at the parking garage, and now the break-in at her apartment. When she finished, there was a long silence on the other end. Finally, Ben said, “You’re dealing with something big, Carter. Bigger than a missing person’s case. This sounds like black-budget operations, off-the-books government work. People disappearing clean? That’s erasure. And only a few organizations have the power to do that.” “The Watcher,” Emma said, recalling what Daniel Royce’s sister had told her. Ben inhaled sharply. “Where did you hear that name?” Emma sat up. “So, you have heard of them.” There was hesitation in his voice when he responded. “Yeah. In whispers. In old, redacted files. I thought it was a myth—a boogeyman for journalists who dug too deep. If they’re real…” He trailed off. Emma clenched her jaw. “They’re real.” Another pause, then, “Alright. I’ll see what I can dig up. But Emma—watch your back. If The Watcher is involved, you’re already on borrowed time.” She hung up, gripping her phone tightly. Rachel had been close to something huge. And now, so was she. --- Hours later, Emma sat in a dark diner, nursing a cup of coffee when her phone buzzed. A message from Ben. “Meet me at my place. I found something.” Emma didn’t waste time. She paid her bill and drove across town to a rundown apartment complex where Ben lived. When he opened the door, his usual laid-back demeanor was replaced with unease. He ushered her inside quickly, locking the door behind her. “I found a connection,” he said, leading her to his cluttered desk where multiple screens glowed with data. “Rachel wasn’t just looking into missing people—she was tracking patterns.” Emma frowned. “Patterns?” Ben pointed to the screen. “Look at this. Every person on Rachel’s list? They all disappeared in the same way. No signs of forced entry, no struggle, surveillance footage missing or corrupted. Almost like they were plucked out of existence.” Emma studied the screen, her stomach twisting. “How is that possible?” Ben exhaled. “That’s the scary part. It’s like someone erased them from the system. Not just physically, but digitally. No bank records, no phone pings, no online footprints after they vanished. It’s as if they never existed.” A chill ran down Emma’s spine. “That’s not just a cover-up. That’s systematic removal.” Ben nodded grimly. “And it gets worse. Rachel must have found something she wasn’t supposed to because—” He hesitated, looking at Emma. “She tried to send a failsafe before she disappeared.” Emma’s pulse quickened. “A failsafe?” Ben turned to another screen. “Two days before she went missing, Rachel sent an encrypted file to an off-grid server. I managed to track it down.” He clicked a few keys, and a loading bar appeared. After a few seconds, a video file popped up. Emma’s breath caught as Rachel’s face filled the screen. She looked exhausted, fear evident in her eyes. “If you’re watching this, I’m already gone,” Rachel said, her voice shaking. “I’ve found something. Something… bigger than I ever expected. People are disappearing, and it’s not random. It’s controlled. There’s a list—an erasure list—and once your name is on it, you’re as good as dead.” Emma leaned in, heart pounding. “Rachel, what did you find?” she muttered. On the screen, Rachel took a shaky breath. “It all leads back to Solomon Industries. They’re running something called ‘Project Blackout.’ I don’t have all the details yet, but I know this—they decide who stays and who disappears. They’re behind The Watcher. And if they know I’ve found this… I won’t make it out alive.” Static cut through the video, and then it ended. Silence filled the room. Emma sat back, her mind racing. Solomon Industries. A massive defense contractor, deeply embedded in government contracts, intelligence work, and classified projects. If they were behind this… Ben exhaled. “If Rachel was right, we’re dealing with something way beyond just a missing persons case. We’re talking about an organization with the power to erase people at will.” Emma’s hands curled into fists. Rachel had uncovered the truth. And now she was gone. Ben clicked a few more keys. “There’s more. Rachel’s last known location before she vanished? It wasn’t her apartment.” Emma looked at him. “Where was she?” Ben turned the screen toward her. A map appeared with a red dot blinking at a remote location outside the city. “A warehouse on the outskirts of town,” Ben said. “That’s where she went before she disappeared.” Emma grabbed her coat. Ben frowned. “Wait—you’re not going alone, are you?” Emma’s eyes were cold and determined. “I need to see what Rachel found.” Ben sighed. “Then at least take this.” He handed her a burner phone. “If things go south, call me.” Emma nodded and left without another word. As she drove toward the warehouse, her mind raced. Rachel had gotten too close. Now Emma was following in her footsteps. And if The Watcher was watching her… She might be next.
