lChapter 24 The First Lie

The apartment was silent. Not because there was nothing left to say. Because no one was prepared for what Vivienne had just admitted. Rain continued to pour through the shattered windows, but even the storm seemed distant now. Vivienne remained kneeling on the fractured floor, her breathing uneven. “I remember…” she whispered. Victor slowly knelt beside her. “What do you remember?” She looked into his eyes, but it was as though she were seeing through him. “I remember making a promise.” “To whom?” She swallowed. “I don’t know.” “I can’t see his face.” “I can only hear his voice.” ⸻ Another fragment surfaced. She stood inside an immense underground chamber. The ceiling disappeared into darkness. Massive white pillars rose from a floor that shimmered like liquid crystal. Julian stood beside her. Much younger. His face carried none of the ambition that would one day consume him. Only wonder. “Vivienne…” “Are you hearing it?” She nodded slowly. “Yes.” “What does it say?” She closed her eyes. “It says…” The memory dissolved before she could hear the answer. ⸻ Vivienne grabbed her head. “No!” “It was right there.” Victor placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Easy.” “Don’t force it.” “The memories will come naturally.” Graves quietly disagreed. “We don’t have time.” ⸻ Everyone turned toward him. “The seal is failing.” Evelyn folded her arms. “You’ve been saying that for twenty years.” “This time it’s different.” “Why?” Graves pointed toward the glowing archive. “Because it recognized her.” ⸻ Orpheus nodded. “He isn’t searching anymore.” “Now…” “…he knows where she is.” ⸻ The room suddenly became colder. Not a gradual drop in temperature. An instant. Their breath became visible. Ice crept across the broken window frames. Victor frowned. “That’s impossible.” The city’s climate control grid had been offline for years. Nothing could cause such a localized freeze. Then they heard it. Footsteps. Not outside the apartment. Below it. Far below. Slow. Measured. One step. Then another. Each one synchronized with the heartbeat shaking the city. THUMP. Step. THUMP. Step. ⸻ Across New Avalon… Entire streets had become rivers of frightened people. Emergency vehicles struggled through collapsing roads. News helicopters filled the skies. Every channel broadcast the same images. Ancient white structures continued emerging from beneath the city. Massive staircases. Towering arches. Endless corridors carved from a stone unlike anything modern science could identify. Experts offered theories. Ancient civilization. Lost empire. Military installation. No explanation survived longer than a few minutes. Because the structures… Were moving. Walls slowly shifted. Columns rotated. Entire buildings rearranged themselves without machinery. The city wasn’t uncovering ruins. It was uncovering something alive. ⸻ Marcus Hale watched in disbelief from the rooftop of Aegis Headquarters. His radio exploded with frantic voices. “Sector Twelve has disappeared!” “We’ve lost the subway tunnels!” “The streets are changing!” Marcus looked over the edge. He had spent thirty years protecting this city. Yet for the first time… He realized he had never truly known it. ⸻ Back inside the apartment… Vivienne suddenly looked toward the hallway. “Someone’s coming.” Victor listened carefully. “I don’t hear anything.” “I do.” The footsteps below continued. Closer now. She knew that rhythm. Not because she had heard it before. Because she had once walked beside it. ⸻ Without warning… The archive projected another hologram. This time it wasn’t a memory. It was a map. The entire underground network beneath New Avalon unfolded in brilliant blue light. Dozens of tunnels appeared. Hidden laboratories. Forgotten elevators. Ancient chambers. Then the map zoomed deeper. Far deeper than any construction record should have existed. The tunnels stopped. Beyond them… There was only one enormous circular chamber. At its center… A single golden light pulsed slowly. Every heartbeat echoed from that point. Victor stared. “I’ve never seen this level.” Graves answered quietly. “No one has.” ⸻ Vivienne stepped closer to the hologram. Something about the chamber felt painfully familiar. Her fingers instinctively reached toward the golden light. The instant she touched it… The map changed. A pathway illuminated. Not toward the chamber. Away from it. A route leading beneath rivers… Through abandoned maintenance tunnels… Into the oldest district of New Avalon. Orpheus smiled softly. “The city remembers you.” ⸻ Evelyn frowned. “What is it showing?” Vivienne answered before anyone else could. “It’s not showing us where to go.” She looked toward the glowing path. “It’s showing us…” “…where we came from.” ⸻ Victor’s face slowly lost all color. “No…” Graves turned toward him. “You know that route.” Victor nodded weakly. “It leads to…” He couldn’t finish. Vivienne looked at him. “To what?” He finally whispered, “The Lazarus Nursery.” ⸻ Silence filled the apartment. Evelyn closed her eyes. “I hoped that place had been destroyed.” Graves shook his head. “It couldn’t be.” “Why not?” “Because that’s where Project Lazarus truly began.” ⸻ Vivienne frowned. “I thought Lazarus was an experiment.” “No.” Graves’ voice was almost solemn. “It was a generation.” “You weren’t one subject.” “You were one of twelve.” The words struck Vivienne like a physical blow. “Twelve?” Victor nodded. “Twelve children.” “Twelve candidates.” “Twelve lives.” Evelyn quietly added, “And only…” She stopped. Vivienne looked at her. “Only what?” Evelyn fought back tears. “Only one survived.” Vivienne’s heartbeat slowed. Her voice barely emerged. “Me?” Evelyn slowly shook her head. “No.” She looked directly into Vivienne’s eyes. “You were never the only survivor.” Another heartbeat shook the city. THUMP. Then… For the first time… A second heartbeat answered from somewhere beneath the earth. THUMP. The room fell silent. Vivienne stared at the others. “There are…” “…two?” Orpheus closed her eyes. Her voice carried a sadness that chilled everyone present. “No.” “There were always two.”m
