Chapter 31 The Ones Who Returned

979 Words
The sky darkened. Not because the sun had disappeared. Because something vast had eclipsed it. Thousands of black silhouettes poured silently through the atmosphere beyond the floating city, moving in flawless formation. They blocked the morning light one layer at a time until New Avalon stood beneath an artificial twilight. For several terrifying seconds… No one breathed. Children stopped laughing. The birds that had returned only hours earlier vanished into the forests beneath the city. Even the wind became still. ⸻ The silver-haired Keeper slowly lowered her head. “We’re too late.” Vivienne looked from the approaching fleet to the woman. “Who are they?” The Keeper answered without taking her eyes off the sky. “They are the Forgotten.” ⸻ Marcus climbed out of the hidden valley just as the first emergency broadcasts reached every surviving communication tower. “Civilian Alert.” “Unknown fleet entering Earth’s atmosphere.” “Remain where you are.” “Await further instructions.” Marcus laughed bitterly. “For thirty years…” “…instructions created every disaster we’ve survived.” He crushed the emergency transmitter beneath his boot. “No more.” ⸻ Inside Graves’ apartment, Orpheus suddenly projected hundreds of holographic windows into the air. Each displayed the same impossible result. IDENTIFICATION FAILED UNKNOWN BIOLOGICAL SIGNATURE Victor stared. “What kind of technology can’t identify life?” Orpheus quietly answered, “The kind that has never encountered it before.” ⸻ The floating city shifted position. Not to defend itself. To shield New Avalon. Its enormous circular rings rotated silently, creating a brilliant dome of shimmering blue light over the recovering city. The silver-haired Keeper closed her eyes. “They’ll come through us first.” Vivienne frowned. “You knew they were following you.” “Yes.” “Then why come here?” The Keeper finally looked at her. “Because this was never their destination.” She stepped closer. “You were.” ⸻ The words settled heavily over everyone present. Me? Vivienne felt her heartbeat quicken. “Why me?” The Keeper smiled sadly. “Because you carry the Echo.” ⸻ Victor whispered, “The Echo…” Graves slowly nodded. “So that’s what Project Lazarus was trying to protect.” ⸻ Vivienne looked between them. “What is the Echo?” The Keeper gently reached toward Vivienne’s forehead. She hesitated. “May I?” Vivienne nodded. The Keeper touched her gently. Immediately… The world disappeared. ⸻ She stood beneath an endless night sky filled with unfamiliar stars. A magnificent city stretched before her. Crystal towers. Rivers of light. Forests that floated among the clouds. Children laughed in gardens suspended above waterfalls. People greeted one another without fear. Without weapons. Without walls. It was breathtaking. “What is this place?” The Keeper’s voice echoed beside her. “Our home.” Vivienne slowly turned. “It’s beautiful.” “It was.” ⸻ The sky suddenly split open. Darkness poured through the stars like ink spilled across glass. Entire constellations vanished. The floating gardens fell. The rivers evaporated. People began running. Screaming. Not from explosions. From silence. Something invisible moved through the city. Everywhere it passed… Light disappeared. Hope disappeared. Memory disappeared. Vivienne watched a mother forget her own child. A soldier forget why he was fighting. An old man forget his own name. Entire civilizations collapsed… Not because they died. Because they forgot who they were. ⸻ “What…” Vivienne whispered. “…is doing this?” The Keeper looked toward the darkness. “Our oldest enemy.” ⸻ The vision changed again. A council chamber. Dozens of Keepers stood around a glowing sphere. At its center… Earth. Small. Blue. Fragile. One elderly Keeper spoke. “The Echo has awakened.” Another answered, “Hide it.” “Where?” The oldest among them smiled gently. “Somewhere no one will ever search.” He touched the image of Earth. Vivienne stared in disbelief. “You brought it here.” The Keeper nodded. “We entrusted it…” “…to humanity.” ⸻ The vision vanished. Vivienne found herself back in New Avalon. She staggered backward. “The Echo is inside me.” “Yes.” “What does it do?” The Keeper’s expression became grave. “It remembers.” ⸻ Far above them… The black fleet finally stopped. Thousands of enormous vessels hung motionless above Earth’s atmosphere. Then… One ship descended. Unlike the beautiful floating city… This craft resembled a mountain carved from obsidian. No windows. No lights. Only endless black metal. It landed without making a sound. The earth trembled beneath its weight. A single doorway opened. Darkness waited inside. Then… Someone stepped out. He looked completely human. Tall. Dark hair. Simple black clothing. No armor. No weapons. He smiled warmly. Almost kindly. The silver-haired Keeper whispered one word. “Malachar…” The man looked directly at Vivienne from nearly a kilometer away. And smiled wider. At that impossible distance… She somehow heard his voice as clearly as if he stood beside her. “After all these centuries…” He inclined his head politely. “…I finally found you.” The air around him rippled. Flowers wilted. The grass turned gray. The sunlight itself seemed to dim. Yet his smile never faded. He took one slow step toward the city. Then another. Behind him… Millions of shadow-like figures emerged from the black vessel. Not soldiers. Not machines. People. People with completely empty eyes. The Keeper’s face hardened. “They aren’t invading.” Vivienne looked at the endless procession. “What are they doing?” The Keeper answered with quiet sorrow. “They’re looking for something they’ve forgotten.” Vivienne instinctively placed a hand over her heart. She suddenly knew… Without anyone telling her… What they were searching for. The Echo. And they would destroy an entire world to reclaim it.
