Chapter 18 Into the Fire

984 Words
The explosion rolled across New Avalon like the roar of an awakening giant. Windows shattered for blocks in every direction. Car alarms screamed into life. Birds erupted from rooftops, disappearing into the rain-filled night as citizens flooded balconies and sidewalks, staring at the towering plume of orange fire clawing toward the clouds. For one endless heartbeat, the city stood still. Then panic began. ⸻ Vivienne pulled herself free from the broken furniture littering her apartment floor. Her ears rang violently. Smoke drifted through the shattered windows while icy rain poured into the room. “Victor!” The old engineer groaned beneath a fallen bookshelf. “I’m… alive.” She rushed to him, lifting the broken shelves just enough for him to crawl free. Blood trickled from a cut above his forehead. “You should be in a hospital.” Victor shook his head. “No.” “They’ll be looking for us now.” “Who?” Before he could answer, every phone inside the apartment began vibrating simultaneously. Not ringing. Vibrating. All with the exact same rhythm. Buzz… Buzz… Buzz… The television flickered once more. Orpheus appeared again. Her calm expression had vanished. For the first time… She looked afraid. “You have less than ten minutes.” Vivienne stared. “Until what?” “They’ll trace the archive.” “What archive?” “The memory core.” Vivienne looked instinctively at the flash drive still clutched tightly in her hand. Orpheus nodded. “They know Victor brought it.” Victor’s face turned pale. “How?” The AI answered quietly. “Because they’ve always been watching him.” ⸻ Across the city… Flames consumed the upper floors of Aegis Headquarters. Emergency drones circled overhead while automated firefighting systems desperately pumped suppressant foam across the burning exterior. Thousands of employees stood behind police barricades, watching their workplace burn. Marcus Hale pushed through the crowd toward Incident Command. A firefighter intercepted him. “Sir, you can’t go in.” “I’m Chief Security Officer.” “The building is unstable.” Marcus flashed his credentials. “I don’t care.” The firefighter hesitated. “The eastern core collapsed.” Marcus froze. “What?” “The explosion started somewhere below the executive laboratories.” Not above. Not outside. Inside. Marcus’s instincts immediately screamed one thing. Someone hadn’t attacked Aegis. Someone had destroyed evidence. ⸻ On the seventy-sixth floor… Julian Drake stood alone inside his smoke-filled office. Emergency sprinklers rained from the ceiling. Half the room was already engulfed in flames. He ignored them. Instead, he unlocked an old steel cabinet hidden behind a painting. Inside rested a single leather folder. The cover bore one faded word. ORPHEUS Julian stared at it for several seconds. His hand lingered on the folder as memories flooded back. A younger Vivienne laughing. Late-night experiments. Impossible dreams. Promises. Finally, he removed one photograph from inside the folder. It showed four people standing together inside the original garage laboratory. Vivienne. Julian. Victor. And… A fourth person. A woman. Julian whispered her name. “Evelyn.” Without another glance, he fed the folder into the fire consuming his office. The flames swallowed decades of secrets within seconds. ⸻ Several miles away… A black convoy moved silently through the rain. No headlights. No license plates. Six identical SUVs. Inside the lead vehicle, a woman in a charcoal suit watched satellite footage of the burning tower. “Status?” A man beside her answered. “The explosion succeeded.” “Casualties?” “Minimal.” “The objective wasn’t casualties.” She nodded. “Doctor Vance?” “Alive.” She smiled faintly. “As expected.” “And the archive?” The man hesitated. “We lost visual contact.” Her smile disappeared. “Find it.” “No mistakes this time.” “Yes, Director.” The convoy accelerated toward downtown. ⸻ Back inside Vivienne’s apartment… Victor struggled to his feet. “We have to leave.” Vivienne looked at Orpheus. “You still haven’t told me who ‘they’ are.” The AI became unusually quiet. Then she answered. “The people who funded Aegis.” Vivienne frowned. “The Board?” “No.” “The people above the Board.” “What people?” “The ones who never appear in photographs.” Victor closed his eyes. “I hoped she’d never have to learn about them.” Vivienne looked from Victor to the screen. “Who are they?” Orpheus spoke one word. “The Architects.” ⸻ Lightning flashed across the sky. The name meant nothing to Vivienne. Yet Victor reacted as though he’d heard a death sentence. “No…” He whispered. “They’re active again.” Vivienne grabbed his arm. “Victor.” “Who are the Architects?” “They’re the reason Aegis exists.” “I founded Aegis.” Victor slowly shook his head. “No, Doctor.” “You founded the company.” “The Architects founded the mission.” ⸻ A loud metallic crash echoed from the apartment hallway. Someone had entered the building. Heavy footsteps climbed the staircase. Measured. Disciplined. Professional. Victor immediately extinguished every remaining light. “They’re here.” Vivienne looked toward the apartment door. The footsteps stopped outside. Silence. Then… Three slow knocks. Exactly like Victor’s earlier. A calm male voice spoke through the door. “Doctor Vance.” “We know you’re inside.” “We’re not here to hurt you.” Vivienne silently raised her pistol. Victor whispered, “Don’t answer.” The voice continued. “We only want the memory archive.” Silence. Then came words that turned Vivienne’s blood to ice. “It doesn’t belong to you.” The doorknob slowly began to turn. Locked. Then… A soft electronic click. Someone on the other side had just bypassed every security lock in the apartment. The door began opening. Very. Very. Slowly.
