ISABELLA'S POV.
The hum of the air conditioner filled the silence of my small apartment. I had been staring at my laptop screen for an hour, pretending to go over Damien Carter’s schedule for the week, but my mind wasn’t here. It was five years in the past, in the blood-soaked living room of my family’s home.
I could still see my mother’s lifeless eyes. My father’s body slumped against the wall. My sister… I swallowed hard, pressing my fingers against my temples. I couldn't remember my sister's death because anytime I did, I was met with the thought that they would have given her an easy death.
This wasn’t the time to drown in memories. This was the time to act. And I needed a new plan to get close to Damien. I had already infiltrated his office. I needed to find a way to infiltrate his private and personal life as well and also, earn his trust.
It's been three weeks of me working for him, three weeks of constant forced smiles, patience and waiting for the right time to strike. But, I knew I couldn't harm him in the office. The man had bodyguards everywhere he went.
While thinking about it, my phone lit up. I picked it up and saw it was a message. From Damien. I sat up straight, my thoughts drifting to why he would message me at this time of the night.
Damien: Hi Stephanie. I'm sorry to disturb you. Are you awake?
I read and reread the text. A part of me wanted to ignore it, but maybe it was something important. Maybe that's why he messaged me. And this was my way of getting him to trust me. I typed a reply back.
Me: I'm awake, Sir. Do you need something?
Three dots. Then his message entered.
Damien: Yes. I'm looking for the calculations for the stock from today. I don't see it anywhere on my laptop. Please send it to me.
The calculations? Seriously? I knew I shouldn't have bothered to answer. I would have just ignored it and told him I was asleep when the message came in. I scoffed and typed a reply.
Me: I'll forward it to your email, Sir. Is there anything else?
His reply was instant.
Damien: No, that will be all. Thank you for your help, Stephanie.
Me: No problem, Sir.
I dropped my phone on the counter, dragging my laptop close to me and forwarding his file to him.
Bastard.
He didn't even recognize me. My father was his most trusted employee and he didn't even recognize his daughter. He deserved what I would give him.
I turned off my laptop, picked up my phone and walked towards my room, falling on the bed instantly. Ever since that night, I've had trouble sleeping. Whenever I did, I saw my parents' faces and my sister's hollow eyes.
As exhausted as my body was, I knew that the only time I would have rest was when I finally killed Damien Carter. I closed my eyes, replaying all the happy moments I had with my family.
From birthdays, to vacations, to holidays. My eyes misted. I missed them terribly. Even with Elias here, I felt so lonely. I lay there for what felt like hours before my phone rang again. It was Elias. I answered on the third ring.
“Hello, Isa.” His warm voice flooded my ears from the receiver.
“Hi, Eli. How are you?” I said, choosing to ignore the fact that he called me Isa. He was my only family after all.
“I'm alright, princess. How are you?”
“I'm good. Tired, but good.” There was a pause.
“Still having trouble sleeping?”
“A little bit.” I admitted quietly.
Isa, do you need me to get a therapist for you?
“The last one didn't do anything to help me, Elias.im alright. It's just… I'll be fine.”
“I'm worried about you kid. Should I come back?”
“No. You deserve this trip. You've been taking care of me for five years. Besides, Damien would recognize you at first glance. We don't want that.” He sighed softly.
“And how's the plan going? Any progess?” I sat up at his question, hugging a pillow subconsciously.
“No. I mean I have infiltrated his work life but asides meetings and plans for events, the mans a mystery. I feel like I should try a different approach. One he won't see coming. But, I don't have any ideas.” There was silence before he spoke again.
“You could try seducing him.”
“What? You know how much it takes me not to slit his throat whenever I'm near him and you want me to seduce him?”
“I know you hate him but think about it. It's the only way and you're a woman. An attractive one at that. Besides, the only way to kill a man is to have him completely wrapped around your fingers. If not for anything, for your family. Don't you want to avenge them anymore, Isa? That's the whole reason you went there. Revenge. This is just a small sacrifice you have to pay to achieve that.” I sighed heavily.
He did have a point actually.
“But, how do I even do that? I've never had a boyfriend in my entire life, Elias. I don't know the first thing about seducing a man.”
“You're a woman. You don't need to know how to seduce a man because you are seduction itself. You'll figure it out, princess. It's a necessary sacrifice. One I can assure you that you won't regret.” His soft voice made me calm. I knew he was right. I would do anything for revenge.
Even give my body to the Devil if it meant I would get close to my target. After a few seconds of pause, I breathed a sigh.
“Fine, Elias. I'll seduce him.”
“I'm sorry I asked this of you, Princess.”
“You didn't. It was my choice. And it's my right. I want to make sure he pays for what he did to them.” Someone called his name and I knew it was time to end the call.
“I have to go, Isa. But I promise, I'll call you tomorrow.”
“Have fun, Elias.”
“You too, Princess.” The call ended and I stared at my ceiling. I had to do this.
For my parents.
For Amara.
And for myself.
