When I returned from lunch, Ava was waiting outside my new office with a tablet. “Ms. Vance, this is spreading fast.” Mia had filmed herself in a shabby apartment. Her hair was tangled, mascara streaked both cheeks, and she held an old photograph of her parents against her chest. “I don't know what to do,” she told the camera. “My cousin Clara threw my aunt and uncle out of their home.
