Chapter Recap: Previously, Aster and Noel escaped the data collapse at Node Q-07, only to realize they were being hunted by the elite Shadow Squad — a ruthless team dispatched by the system’s enforcers. Meanwhile, Byte’s mysterious choice to let Aster go continues to haunt her, raising questions about hidden motives and shifting alliances. As Aster pieces together fragmented memories and growing suspicions, she steels herself for the confrontation ahead. Chapter 4: Shadows Closing In Noel fumbled with the interference module, his fingers trembling as red warnings flashed across the screen: “Aster, if we drag this out, we’ll be locked down—” Aster’s eyes were icy calm. “Shut up. Let me think.” Node Q-07 — the “Abandoned Node.” On the surface, it was nothing but the decaying remnants of a discarded system, a forgotten corner of the virtual cosmos. But to many runaways and rebels, it was a hidden sanctuary, a place of layered data walls and encrypted tunnels — a digital labyrinth. Yet Aster knew one thing: Shadow Squad wouldn’t care. They weren’t here to search. They were here to eliminate them. Crack— Overhead, part of the ceiling burst open. A silver figure descended, landing without a sound, as light as a falling feather. The air froze. Silver mask. Vex. The Squad’s disrupter, a master of sonic interference and psychological manipulation. Ripples shimmered across his mask’s surface. Suddenly, a voice echoed through the room— Aster’s own voice. “Run… run, now…” Her past screams, perfectly replicated, bouncing off every wall. Noel’s pupils shrank in horror. “He… he’s scrambling the sonic signals…” Aster grabbed his arm, pulling him back. “Don’t panic. He likes to toy with prey first. He won’t strike right away.” The air rippled again. A slender figure glided in, blue streaks trailing like ghostly ribbons. Iris. She moved like a phantom, long hair floating, delicate fingers tracing the air as if peeling back invisible layers. At her fingertips, blue neural lines flickered, and she tilted her head with a chilling smile. “Interesting… what are you hiding? I can hear it… the electronic heartbeat…” Her gaze locked onto Noel’s pocket — where the backup energy core was hidden. Noel nearly stumbled backward. “How… how does she know?!” Then came the heavy, deliberate footsteps. A massive silhouette entered, casting a suffocating shadow in the dim space. Krane. He adjusted the cuffs of his shirt meticulously, eyes glittering with twisted precision. “Elegance,” he murmured softly, “is the first rule of combat.” Aster’s heart tightened. Madman. But her mind stayed sharp, calculating at lightning speed. Vex relied on sound; cut the echoes, and his power would drop. Iris depended on input signals; a burst of interference could overload her senses. Krane… monstrous strength, but if his emotion suppressor was damaged, his own rage would turn him into a liability. Noel’s voice quivered. “Aster… can we really beat them?” Aster drew a slow, steadying breath. “Don’t be afraid. We have a way out.” Her eyes turned sharp, the glint of determination piercing through. In her mind, Lucien’s face surfaced—his betrayal, his cold, clipped words: “Sorry, Aster. It’s just business.” At that moment, Vex give a low laugh. But the voice was no longer his own. It was Lucien’s voice, perfectly copied. “Glitch Queen… did you really think you could escape?” Aster’s breath hitched. Her fingers crept toward the signal switcher at her waist. No. Not again. Not this time. “You’ll see,” she whispered under her breath, her voice so soft it almost vanished into the air. “You’re all going to pay.” And in that charged silence, the hunt began.
