His Deception

Chapter Three

Trudging along the highway that connects to the road leading to my apartment. Since my apartment was closer to work we decided to stop by and figure out what next to do there. I see other people on the road, some sitting and crying, some walking hurriedly, some carrying weapons like us (sharpened sticks, knives even big stones).

There was traffic on the high way and the side streets and the cars barely moved an inch or two before they stopped . Some cars were abandoned and some had bloodstains on them.

I shudder slightly, thinking back to the hospital and Hoff.

What did he become? It can't be..

A zombie?

This were stuffs my foster brother used to frighten me as a kid.

I'm living in a frigging nightmare

Shaking my head, as if it could clear my thoughts. I feel Matt's gaze and glance at him.

"What?", I snap at him

"We're there."

Looking around, I see my apartment building not far off but the street was unusually quiet and it never is not even in the night.

Luckily for us, my apartment is on the ground floor and I quietly unlocked the door and enter flicking on the lights.

No electricity?

I rush to my room pulling out my old backpack and beginning stuffing it with T-shirts and trousers, my only picture of me and my family.

Walking to the kitchen, I stuff the few canned foods I have into the bag. Getting a sack, I feel five plastic bottles with water and pass it to Matt. Going back to my wardrobe, I look behind for my old baggy comfy sweatshirt and give it to Matt.

"Change into it... It's way bigger than me but it should fit you somehow"

Wanting to wash off the grime and dry blood from my body but not wanting to attract 'unwanted attention' from the sound of the shower, I take a towel, wet it and use it to wipe my face, hands and all my body taking extra care not to make noise. After that, I go on to wash the sand and dust off my hair. I towel dry and sigh

Ah that's better

Throwing the dirty towel in the laundry, I put on more comfortable clothes and pull my hair into a bun and peer at my reflection in the mirror. Staring at me is a woman with pink skin from the hard scrubbing and tired brown eyes.

Opening the door, I walk to the kitchen where Matt is.

"I'm done. Go wash up, I'll prepare something for us to eat" I say to him

"Okay, thanks"

After he leaves the kitchen, I open the fridge and bring out a jar of peanut butter. Taking the bread I brought on my way home yesterday, I make sandwiches and warm up the milk.

While waiting for Matt, I bring out my phone to check on whatever is happening but there's no signal..

Great

I peek out of the window seeing it's already evening and few people shuffling around. Heading back to the kitchen, Matt is already settled on the chair eating his sandwich.

Looking to him, I ask "what do we do now, there's no service, no electricity, nothing?"

He looks at me deep in thought, "Do you have a radio?"

Nodding, I stand up and retrieve my solar-powered radio. Fiddling with the knob, I change through channels but all I hear is static.

After few minutes, I'm about to give up when Matt says "Stop..go back a little"

I go back then straining my ears, I hear a voice.

"...unknown outbreak....transmitted...blood..s-saliva...scratches....". Then static.

Fiddling with the antenna, it comes back "Do not engage the infected...run... Emergency centers....around the city where...the police have been stationed ....go to International High school....or Stuvyent s-s....". Then static again.

After minutes and still nothing,i quit fiddling with the knob and antenna.

"I guess it's settled then, we head to the school tomorrow at first light. It's too late to try getting there." he says looking at me

"Yh, we don't want to be stuck outside after dark. They'll have food and most importantly police which means weapons" I say agreeing with him.

After putting the radio in my backpack and rechecking the windows and doors, I say a 'goodnight' to Matt who was sleeping on the couch and head up to my room.

After the day I've had, it's no surprise I fall asleep immediately my head touches the pillow.
