Chapter 4

1870 Words
The cold night air settled heavily over the fortress, and Serena found herself pacing her small room, her thoughts tangled. Damon’s anger, his mysterious growls, and the strange pull she felt toward him—it was all too much. She clenched her fists, staring at the flickering candle on her bedside table. Why do I feel this way about him? Why do I care? Her questions went unanswered, but she couldn’t deny the curiosity growing within her. Damon was a monster, cruel and unyielding, but there were cracks in his armor. Brief flashes of vulnerability. And then there was his hatred for her father. The lock on her door clicked, jolting her from her thoughts. Damon entered without knocking, his towering presence filling the room. He looked tense, his jaw clenched as if he was battling an inner storm. “Get up,” he ordered. “What now?” she snapped, unwilling to let him see her unease. “I need you to understand something,” he said, ignoring her sarcasm. “You think I’m cruel, that I brought you here to torment you. But this isn’t about you, Serena. It’s about what your family did to mine.” Her stomach churned. “What are you talking about?” Damon’s eyes darkened, the gold flecks of his wolf flickering within them. “Come with me.” Without waiting for a response, he turned and left the room. Serena hesitated before following, her heart pounding in her chest. The fortress was eerily silent as Damon led her down a winding staircase and into a dimly lit study. The room was unlike the rest of the fortress. Books lined the walls, and a large desk sat near the fireplace, its surface cluttered with papers and maps. Damon stood by the fire, his broad shoulders tense as he stared into the flames. “You want answers?” he said without looking at her. “Then listen.” Serena crossed her arms, keeping her distance. “I’m listening.” Damon took a deep breath, his voice low and strained. “I was twelve when Victor Grey and Magnus stormed our pack. My father was the alpha, strong and just. My mother... she was kind, loved by everyone. I had a younger sister, Ella. She was only six.” Serena’s heart sank at the mention of his family. The pain in his voice was raw, cutting through her defenses. “What happened?” she asked quietly. Damon turned to face her, his eyes blazing. “Victor and Magnus came under the guise of peace. They claimed they wanted to unite our packs, to form an alliance. My father believed them. He invited them into our home, shared our table.” He paused, his hands curling into fists. “That night, they attacked. Victor killed my father while Magnus slaughtered our warriors. They set our home on fire, trapping my mother and sister inside. I tried to save them...” His voice broke, and he looked away, his jaw tight. “But I was too late.” Serena’s breath hitched. She had heard stories of her father’s ruthlessness, but never like this. She couldn’t imagine the horror Damon had endured. “I don’t believe you,” she whispered, though her voice lacked conviction. Damon’s gaze snapped to hers, his expression a mix of anger and despair. “You don’t want to believe it, Serena. But deep down, you know the truth. Your father and Magnus are monsters. They destroy anyone who gets in their way.” She shook her head, her chest tightening. “My father protected me. He raised me.” “He used you,” Damon said, his voice cold. “Just like he used everyone else. Magnus and Victor are two sides of the same coin, and you’ve been blind to it your entire life.” Tears pricked her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. “You don’t know anything about me or my family.” “I know enough,” Damon replied, stepping closer. “Your father and Magnus tore my world apart, and I’ve spent every moment since planning my revenge. That’s why you’re here, Serena. You’re leverage. A reminder to Victor of the pain he caused me.” Her legs felt weak, and she leaned against the desk for support. “You’re using me to hurt him?” Damon’s wolf flashed in his eyes, and his voice dropped to a dangerous growl. “Yes. But it’s more than that now. My wolf—” He stopped himself, his jaw clenching as he turned away. “What about your wolf?” she pressed, sensing his hesitation. He didn’t answer, his broad shoulders rigid as he stared into the fire. “It doesn’t matter,” he said finally. “What matters is that you understand why I hate your family.” Serena’s mind spun with questions, doubts, and a flicker of guilt. Could Damon be telling the truth? Had her father truly done something so terrible? She wanted to deny it, to defend her family, but the pain in Damon’s voice was undeniable. “What am I supposed to do with this?” she asked softly. Damon turned back to her, his expression unreadable. “That’s for you to decide. But don’t think for a second that I’ll let you run back to Victor. You’re mine now, Serena. Whether you like it or not.” His words sent a shiver down her spine, and she looked away, unable to meet his intense gaze. “You’re a hypocrite,” she said bitterly. “You hate my father for his cruelty, but you’re just like him.” Damon’s eyes narrowed, and his wolf rumbled in his chest. “I am nothing like him.” Before she could respond, a knock at the door interrupted them. Damon growled low in his throat. “What is it?” A warrior entered, his face pale. “There’s been an incident in the eastern wing, Alpha. A fight between the pack members.” Damon sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Handle it,” he snapped. The warrior hesitated. “It’s about her,” he said, nodding toward Serena. Damon’s wolf surged forward, his golden eyes glowing. “What do you mean?” “One of the pack members... she thinks Serena is a threat. She tried to attack her earlier in the hall,” the warrior explained. Damon’s growl filled the room, and Serena took a step back, her heart racing. His protectiveness was startling, almost possessive. “Who was it?” Damon demanded. The warrior hesitated. “Liana.” Damon’s expression darkened, and he stormed out of the room without another word. Serena followed, her curiosity and fear driving her forward. When they reached the eastern wing, the scene was chaotic. Liana, a tall woman with sharp features, was pinned to the ground by two warriors. Her eyes were wild, and she snarled as Damon approached. “You dare attack someone under my protection?” Damon growled, his voice thunderous. “She doesn’t belong here!” Liana spat. “She’s one of them!” Damon’s wolf surged to the surface, and he pinned Liana to the ground with one swift motion. His glowing eyes met hers, filled with rage. “If you ever touch her again, I will end you.” Selena was too tired and scared to continue watching what was happening. Her curiosity has been satisfied, it was clear she was hated by everyone here. She retreated to her room and looked the door. Later that night, unable to sleep, Serena wandered into the study again. The fire had burned low, casting flickering shadows across the room. She approached the desk, her eyes scanning the papers scattered across it. Among the mess, a leather-bound journal caught her attention. It looked old, the edges worn and frayed. Curiosity piqued, she opened it, her fingers trembling as she flipped through the pages. Serena’s hands trembled as she turned another brittle page of the journal, the faint scent of aged parchment filling the air. The handwriting was elegant but rushed, as though the writer had been in a desperate race against time. She wondered who the owner of the book was? "The night we met the Blackwoods was the beginning of everything—and the end of so much more." Serena’s brow furrowed, her eyes darting across the page. Was this her mother? "Damon’s father, Alaric, was nothing like I expected. He wasn’t a ruthless warlord or a cold tyrant. He was a man burdened by the weight of his pack’s survival, just as I was. We needed each other, though neither of us wanted to admit it. Magnus and Victor had already begun their conquest, threatening to destroy everything we held dear. Alaric saw them for what they were—monsters hiding behind power. I thought I could trust him." Serena leaned closer, her heart pounding as the entries became more erratic. "We struck a pact, one sealed in blood and necessity. Alaric would lend us the strength of his warriors, and in return, I promised to protect something of great importance to him. He never told me what it was—not exactly—but I knew it was connected to his family’s legacy. Something ancient. Something powerful." Serena flipped to the next page, the words growing darker, heavier. "I should have foreseen the betrayal. Alaric trusted me, but Victor saw the alliance as a threat. He convinced Magnus that the Blackwoods would turn on us. By the time I realized what was happening, it was too late. Magnus led a raid on the Blackwood stronghold under the guise of an attack from their enemies. He slaughtered them all. Alaric. His mate. His pack." Her breath caught as the words blurred before her eyes. "I tried to stop it—I swear I did—but Magnus wouldn’t listen. He claimed he was protecting us. I was left with the knowledge that I had brought ruin to the Blackwoods. Alaric’s last words still haunt me: ‘You’ve condemned us all.’ "And then there was Damon." Serena’s grip tightened on the journal as she read the next entry, the ink smudged as though her mother’s tears had stained the page. "I saw Damon that night. A boy, no older than ten, standing in the ashes of his home. His eyes burned with a hatred I had never seen before. Magnus left him alive as a warning to others, but I knew it was a mistake. That boy would grow into a man who would never forget—never forgive. He will hunt us to the ends of the earth." Serena’s stomach twisted, her chest aching with a mixture of guilt and confusion. She turned the page, but the words grew more fragmented. "The object I swore to protect—I buried it deep, where no one can find it. Not even Victor knows its true nature. If Damon ever discovers the truth..." The rest of the entry trailed off, unfinished. Serena closed the journal, her mind still trying to understand what she had just read. Whatever this secret was, it could change everything.
