I loved you Kace, but I can't do this.
That was the last line on the first page, and the rest after that was a packet full of things for a divorce .
Just like she said.
He'd had that entire packet for about two weeks now. And he kept reading the first page. His mind was gone and he couldn't think straight.
He claimed he didn't drink but that's all he'd been doing. Drinking and smoking. Thinking about Karma and his son.
Kacy stood up from the couch and angrily threw the stack of papers, making them scatter across his living room. He looked at his phone, and dialed Karmas number.
He's been trying to get in contact with her since the day he received the divorce papers, her goodbye letter and even the ring. But he's been getting the voicemail.
He threw his phone against the wall, shattering it as he stumbled towards the door. He didn't know where he was going but he just needed to get away.
That was now the only thing on his mind.
Getting away.
"Momma, can you stay with me tonight?" Karma sniffled. She wiped her eyes as she sat on the edge of her bed.
It was hard on her to send those papers and she still had hers on the kitchen counter, unsigned.
"Of course baby, I'm gonna go check on Moe. Go ahead and get yourself comfortable"
Karma nodded and went to take a shower, a much needed shower at that. She pulled her hair into a bun and sat up against the shower wall, as the tears silently fell.
She knew Kacy was going through something, with his brother coming back and all but the way he was treating her. The way he spoke to and about her. That wasn't love. And from the looks of things, Kacy didn't love her anymore.
He was too busy trying to prove himself to his brother to even notice that Karma wasn't putting up a fight anymore.
She fought for almost three months. Now, she was tired. She still loved Kacy, always would, but she needed to focus on her newborn baby and Moesha. Kacy was a grown man and couldn't be babied anymore.
He needed to find his own way. And in Karma's mind, he would come back when he was ready.
Once Karma finished her shower, she went into the kitchen and took a seat beside her mom. "So what's been going on?" She asked, taking her mind off Kacy.
"Nothing really. My memory is starting to come back, finally"
"Doctors tell you what Joe was giving you?"
"Some date r**e drug. With the high dosage and the long period of time he was giving it to me, I started to have black outs"
"But you're good now, right?"
"Yes , I'm fine now. How does it feel to be a mother? Long nights, early mornings"
"To be honest, Keegan doesn't wake up through the night. And he wakes up around 8, sometimes 9"
"Oh wow. You were nothing like that. Woke up like three times a night. Always hungry. I remember you used to run around without your diaper on "
"Oh god, stop" Karma laughed "I really don't wanna hear how I used to freeball"
"I'm glad I put a stop to it when I did. And it didn't matter where you were, you just ripped it off and went on the run"
Karma laughed as a knock came at her door. She went to open it and Morgan, Dion, Kat, Ash and baby Morgan all walked inside.
"What y'all doing here?" Karma asked as she closed the door.
"We didn't want you to be all sad and s**t about those divorce papers. So we came over" Ash said.
Karma grabbed baby Morgan "y'all sleeping over?"
"Of course" Dion mumbled as he laid on the couch. "We better be. s**t. Woke me up out my sleep"
Karma threw a pillow at Dion "Shut up, you know you wanted to come see me"
He smirked "I do be missing your bossy, clingy ass "
"Clingy?" Morgan asked "Karma far from clingy"
"Can we not discuss my personality traits, please. Thank you" she laughed. "But I'm glad y'all came over to get my mind off things. Let's get Morgan to sleep then we can do whatever"
*****
Karma held Keegan against her chest and held onto Moeshas hand. "Look both ways before you cross Moe."
"Left then right then left again" she said out loud "It's safe now Karma"
"Alright, come on" they crossed the street and made their way to the apartment building that Loretta stayed in. Karma had to figure out the truth about Kenton because something weren't adding up.
Like how someone can get shot then appear on a random Monday? She needed to ask questions about where he's been for years.
Moeshas small knock on the door gave Karma a few seconds to get her thoughts together before the door opened. "Karma, hey" Loretta smiled then her eyes traveled to Moesha "my baby"
"Hi grandma" Morgan giggled, hugging her legs.
"Come in, come in" everyone walked inside and Loretta gasped. "Keegan, the baby?"
"Yes, you wanna hold him?"
"Of course I do" she reached for her only grandson and cradled him close to her as she kissed his forehead. "He looks so much like Kacy did when he was younger"
Loretta sat on the couch and turned on cartoons for Moesha to watch. "So " Karma cleared her throat.
"I know why you're Karma. And honestly, Kacy should've told you this from the beginning but I can't fault him. I blame myself. I lied to shield him from the truth because he was young and looked up to his big brother. The truth would've crushed him"
Loretta sighed "Let me stop mumbling. Anyway, Kenton has had mental issues for so long. The day he was shot," she used her fingers to air quote the word "was a strange day. Him and Kacy were out playing basketball for for weeks before that, Kenton complained of people being after him. His friends. But he never had any, from my understanding. Anyway, while they were out playing ball, which was the fourth of July, fireworks went off. In Kenton's mind, he was just shot and he dropped like he was really dead. Kacy ran home to get me and he never saw his brother after that. "
"You faked his death to keep him from Kacy?" Karma asked.
"I had to. Kenton isn't right. He's my son but he is sick and needs help. I had to keep him from Kacy or Kacy would've become the same way. "
Karma shook her head "Do you know why Kace has been acting the way he has, since Kenton came back?"
"Like I said, Kacy looks up to Kenton. To him, Kenton has it all and more. When they were younger, Kacy used to get in so much trouble trying to prove himself to his brother. And even though Kenton has issues, he's far from stupid. He's a manipulator"
"Loretta, i-"
"Listen. I know you wanna give up on my son. But I'm begging you, please. Don't leave him. You being with him has taken him to a new and better place in life. You better him Karma, he's just lost and needs time and guidance"
"Have you seen h-"
"Not since the baby shower. Last time he up and left without a word, was when I was a drug addict. You see how long it took for me to see him since then"
"You're saying he might not come back for years?"
"For me, that's how it was. But you, I highly doubt it"
"I need to check on him" Karma shook her head and sighed. "I hope he didn't sign those papers "
It was clear to her that she made a mistake. He needed her and she was about to leave him.
"I know he didn't"
Karma grabbed Kenton and grabbed Moeshas attention. She made her way over to Kacy's place and when she walked inside, she gasped.
His house was horrible. Empty bottles and small joints left all over the floor and table. The divorce papers were thrown all on the floor and it was dark inside.
"Kacy?" Moesha yelled out. "Are you ok?"
No answer. But someone was clearly upstairs in the bedroom. Karma held onto Moeshas hand as they made their way upstairs towards the room.
Pushing open the door, Karma froze.
"I knew you'd come" Kenton smirked, pointing a gun directly at her. "Come in, have a seat"
