The wrong impression

Chapter 4 I limped out of my door. Three familiar faces blocked my path. Romeo, Molly, and Arizona. They called themselves The Coris, the self-appointed king and queens of gossip. “A notice to quit in three days, oh girlie, that's so soon.”Romeo said dramatically. “Get out of my way.” I snarled. “How do you intend to pay in just three days, girlie?” Molly, one of the girls mocked. “Just become one of the Coris and everything you need will be given to you.” Arizona, the other girl said and they resumed laughing. Become one of what? The campus gossip? I'd rather accept the name ‘Chemistry nerd’ than to be one of the Coris. I tore off the notice from the door and walked away. I would have done that before going in but I was so anxious to speak to Sophia. By the time I got to the basketball court, it was really crowded. How do I get to know where she is? “Make way. Make way, I want to get a nice shot of my crush.” A girl behind me said. I'm certain that Sophia is here for the same purpose. “Bryan is so hot. Seeing him alone makes me wet.” She moaned. Seriously? Did she just say that out loud? I didn't bother to look at the players, I came here for a purpose. I texted Sophia. ‘I am at the basketball court but I can't find you anywhere.’ After several minutes with no reply, I gave up checking my phone. I searched around but couldn't find her. The court became more crowded than earlier. I stepped out of the crowd and sat on a bench, waiting for the game to be over. “We are late.” The Coris again. “Oh gosh. I wish I could get just a single shot of Bryan" Arizona said. “Oh my gosh, he's so handsome.” Romeo said. “Gross,” I muttered. Why does it feel like I'm the only sensible person here? “Oh look at her, she's lost in thought about her hostel fee.” Molly mocked. They all laughed. “Focus guys. This isn't why we are here, we've got a hot dude to see here.” Arizona nibbled. I looked away without sparing them another glance. “Oh my gosh, the game is over already.” The Coris said. Thank goodness. Sophia can now respond to me. The final whistle echoed across the court, and the crowd erupted into deafening cheers. Girls rushed toward the exit with their phones raised high, calling out names over one another. "Bryan!" "Ace!" "I love you!" I found myself whispering Ace's name too. Ace Carter stepped out first, sweat glistening on his forehead. My heart skipped. Without thinking, I reached into my bag and pulled out the bottle of water I'd packed that morning. I wasn't planning to give it to him but maybe this was my chance. I ignored the dull ache in my ankle and I limped toward him. Before I could say a word, a dozen girls surrounded him, each stretching out a bottle of water with bright smiles. Ace barely spared them a glance. He simply thanked them with a polite nod and walked away. I slowly lowered my hand. I guess I never stood a chance. A few seconds later, another wave of screams erupted. Bryan Clement had stepped out of the court. Our eyes met almost instantly. His gaze dropped to my injured ankle before settling on the bottle still clutched in my hand. He walked straight toward me, leaving dozens of girls behind. He stopped in front of me with a smug grin. "Still limping?" I shot him a glare instead of answering, then his eyes drifted to the bottle. "For Ace?" I remained silent. The corner of his mouth lifted. "What a waste of good water." He shrugged. Before I could react, he plucked the bottle from my hand, twisted the cap open and took a long drink. "There," he said after swallowing, handing me the empty bottle with a shrug. "At least someone appreciated it." "You arrogant jerk!" “Don't tell me you limped all the way here just to see your eleventh-grade crush.” “Do not say that in public!” Whispers began to fly before I realized it. “Did Bryan just take her water?" "No way." "Isn't she the chemistry nerd?" Girls who had been smiling moments ago were now glaring at me as if I'd committed a crime. My stomach tightened. They had it all wrong. Just then, I heard a familiar voice from behind. “Lia, what are you doing here?” I turned to see Sophie and her gang. “Sophie, I've been looking for you everywhere.” She didn't even say anything to me. Her eyes were all glued to Bryan. “Hi, Bryan,” She said to him. He walked out on her immediately. Why would he do that? Sophie is obviously one of the girls that are obsessed with him and she is also classy. “What were you saying to him?” “What is that question supposed to mean?” “Are you happy now? You got him angry. Is it not obvious that he doesn't like nerds like you?” “You are mistaken, Sophie. I came here to search for you.” “About searching for me, never do that again. People are beginning to think I am related to the nerd.” “What do you mean?” “I saw him giving you a princess carry just a few hours ago and you still ask what she meant?” One of the girls. “No. You had it all wronged. I have nothing to do with him.” “Whatever.” She shrugged. “Why were you texting me uncontrolably?” “Sophie, I need your help. My space is going to be taken from me in three days.” I said. “I asked you to go to Mr. Penuel. Didn't I?” “I did but he said I should spend a night with him first but when I refused, he gave me a deadline to pay up.” Sophie and her girls laughed so hard. “You seriously refused?” One of the girls said. “That's what people like you who can't afford to pay their bills do but if you don't want to, you just have to find a way to settle it yourself.” “What?” “Never call me for this rubbish again!” she pointed her finger to my face. I watched Sophie walk away with her friends, leaving me standing there alone. My throat tightened. Three days. No job. No savings. No one is willing to help me. I lowered my head and started walking.
