*** Sereia's POV ***
The courtyard below was a graveyard of scorched silver and broken Lycan elites.
Before the ash could even settle, Xander moved. He didn't take the stairs. With a flex of his massive legs, he cleared the forty-foot vertical leap from the crater directly to my balcony, landing silently in a crouch.
He was breathing heavily, his white tactical shirt torn to shreds, his skin slick with sweat and the blood of the Vanguard. The feral, psychotic edge of his Alpha war-form was still bleeding through his human features—his claws remained extended, and his eyes were a burning, radioactive crimson.
He stalked toward me, the sheer heat radiating from his body fighting back the freezing wind.
My analytical mind immediately flagged the danger. Cognitive load: Critical. He had just channeled a catastrophic amount of kinetic energy. His primal instincts—the fast, reactive, violent part of his brain—were entirely overriding his logical processing.
But I didn't step back. The Mate bond thrummed between us, a steady, anchoring rhythm.
"Did they touch you?" Xander growled, his voice so deep it vibrated the stone beneath my boots. He reached out, his massive, blood-stained hands gently grasping my shoulders, pulling me flush against his chest.
"I was out of range," I replied evenly, ignoring the ruined state of my own tactical clothes and the agonizing throb in my throat. I looked up into his glowing eyes. "But we have a critical data breach."
Xander blinked, the violent red in his irises flickering as my cold, steady tone forced his brain to reboot. "What?"
"Commander Kaelen was carrying a telepathic transmission beacon," I explained, quickly deconstructing the battlefield logic. "The Nullification Matrix wasn't an execution order. It was a stress test. Elder Vance just downloaded my exact magical signature and verified my 12% output limit."
Xander’s grip tightened. A low snarl ripped from his throat as he looked down at the smoking crater. "I should have burned them to ash before they could plant the pillars."
"No. That was exactly his trap," I said, my mind running through the psychological algorithms of our enemy. "Vance is using an anchoring effect. He threw a massive, highly visible threat at your front door. It’s a psychological heuristic. He wants your Alpha instincts to kick in. He wants you to anchor your defense to this physical territory, to lock down your pack, and wait for the next strike."
"An Alpha does not abandon his territory," Xander countered, the instinctual Lycan pride bristling instantly.
"An Alpha doesn't, but a survivor does," I said, placing my hand flat against his chest, right over his violently racing heart. "If we stay here, Vance controls the variables. He will send an army calibrated exactly to our current output. We will be fighting a war of attrition inside a closed system. We will lose."
Xander stared at me, the feral beast in his eyes slowly receding, replaced by the sharp, tactical intelligence of a Pack Leader. The Mate bond flared again, not with protective rage, but with profound, intellectual respect. He was finally looking at me not just as a Mate to be protected, but as an equal strategist.
"So we break the system," Xander murmured, his large hand coming up to cover mine where it rested against his chest. "We go off-grid. Where?"
"I need a hardware upgrade," I said, lightly touching the cracked iron collar at my neck. "The 12% output is enough to manipulate ambient magic, but I can't break the remaining eighty-eight runes without catastrophic self-decapitation. I need to find the source code of this iron. I need to find the Genesis Forge."
Xander’s entire body tensed. The name clearly meant something terrible to him.
"The Genesis Forge is a myth," he said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "It’s an old wives' tale about a subterranean nexus where the first Lycan Sorcerers supposedly stole fire from the dragons."
"It’s not a myth," I corrected him, my golden eyes flashing. "Because I can feel the resonance of the iron around my neck trying to reconnect with its origin point. Now that the collar is cracked, it’s acting like a weak compass needle."
I looked out over the violet, corrupted sky above the pine forest.
"Vance expects us to build a fortress here," I said, a cold, calculating smile touching my lips. "So we leave him an empty one. We take the offensive, find the Forge, and completely format his containment matrix. Once I have 100% of my power back..."
"...we burn the High Council to the ground," Xander finished for me. The idea of a suicidal, two-person war against the ruling class of his own species didn't terrify him. It ignited him.
He leaned down, pressing his forehead against mine, his thumbs tracing my cheekbones. The scent of winter pine completely enveloped me.
"Pack your things, Architect," Xander whispered, a dark, dangerous promise in his tone. "We leave in one hour."
Before we set foot outside the safehouse, I required one final logic check. I couldn't leave any active vulnerabilities behind.
"Martha," I stated, staring into Xander’s crimson eyes. "She is still hidden in the sub-floor of the Fringe. If Elder Vance tracks my signature back to that sector, she will be deleted."
Xander didn't hesitate. He tapped his rogue comms network, assigning a silent, highly specialized beta unit to the task. "She has already been extracted, Sereia. My men moved her to an encrypted, off-grid safehouse three hours ago. She is completely isolated from the Council's grid."
Variable secured. The final vulnerability in my system was officially patched.
