Yoreus had trouble concealing his excitement as he walked into Irtan’s chamber, but made an effort to act as casually as always. Behind him, Loktra fidgeted as sweat gathered on her forehead. Sometimes he couldn’t help wondering how a woman like her could have made it to the rank of the third archmage with her constant lack of firm opinions and reluctance to act. At the same time, because of that, she had outlasted several other archmages who’d chosen the wrong side in the subtle political struggles in the Towers, and here she was, with the title of the third archmage secured. At least if Yoreus got what he wanted, she’d be easy to manipulate and control, and would likely support him out of the desire to avoid confrontations. The first archmage poured three cups and indicated the chairs.
