Testing Veronica’s Intentions

990 Words
Aaron I pulled into the parking lot of the café, my heart pounding. The anticipation was like a thick fog settling in my chest. I stepped out of the car, taking a moment to collect my thoughts. As I walked toward the entrance, I couldn’t help but compare the scene before me to my earlier conversations with Heather. The way she carried herself, the determination in her voice—she was a force of nature. Then there was Veronica, waiting inside. I hadn’t even seen her yet, but I knew she’d be different. The thought made my gut twist. I spotted her through the glass door. Veronica was sitting at a table, dressed in a fitted blouse and dark jeans, her hair cascading over her shoulders. She looked polished and put together, but all I could think was how superficial it all seemed compared to Heather’s raw strength and sincerity. I shook my head, trying to focus. I had to play this right. I couldn’t let my thoughts wander; I needed to stay sharp. Taking a deep breath, I pushed the door open, and the bell chimed above me. Veronica looked up, her expression shifting from neutral to a bright smile as I approached. "Aaron! I’m glad you could make it." "Yeah, well, I didn’t have much choice," I replied, trying to keep my tone light. I slid into the seat across from her, forcing myself to meet her gaze. "I wanted to talk about… everything." Veronica leaned forward, her elbows on the table, giving me that doe-eyed look that I’d once found charming but now felt calculating. "I know this is all overwhelming. I didn’t mean to drop such a big surprise on you. I just thought you’d want to know." I forced a nod, my mind racing. I had no idea how to approach this without exposing my nerves. "Right. I mean, I—" I paused, trying to find the right words. "I wasn’t aware of the situation, Veronica. This is… a lot." She smiled again, but it felt rehearsed. "I understand. You probably have a lot of questions." Just then, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was Heather, and I quickly glanced at the screen before answering discreetly. "Hey." "Is she there?" Heather’s voice came through clearly, laced with urgency. "Yeah, I’m with her now." "Good. Listen carefully. She’s playing the goodie two-shoes role perfectly, but we need to shake her up a bit. Tell her that you’re getting married to the ex-mayor’s daughter." I felt the words stick in my throat. "What? Why would I—" "Just trust me! It’ll rattle her, make her show her hand. You can handle it." I took a deep breath, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. "Alright. But if this backfires—" "It won’t. Just do it." I nodded, even though she couldn’t see me. "Fine." I hung up and looked back at Veronica, who was watching me with a curious smile. "So, what’s on your mind?" Veronica asked, a little too eager. "Well," I started, mentally preparing myself. "I wanted to let you know that I’m getting married. To the ex-mayor’s daughter." Veronica’s smile faltered for just a split second, and I caught the flicker of surprise in her eyes before she quickly masked it. "Wow, Aaron. That’s... unexpected." I could see the gears turning in her head. She was calculating, trying to piece together my words and figure out what this meant for her. "Yeah, it kind of came out of nowhere," I continued, trying to maintain my composure. "But it’s happening." Her voice was smooth, but there was an edge I hadn’t noticed before. "I didn’t realize you were so serious about your future, especially given the circumstances we’re in." "Well, it’s complicated," I replied, pushing back against the growing anxiety in my chest. "But I think it’s the right thing to do." "You think?" she replied, her tone dripping with a hint of sarcasm. "Or are you just saying that to convince yourself?" I clenched my jaw, feeling the tension rise between us. "I’m not here to play games, Veronica. I just want to understand what’s going on. You say you’re pregnant, but I need more than just words. I need proof." Her expression hardened for a moment before she smoothed it over with a placating smile. "I get that, Aaron. I really do. But you can’t expect me to just provide proof without knowing where we stand. I thought we could work together on this." "I don’t know if I trust you," I said bluntly, feeling the weight of her gaze. "Not after everything." Veronica leaned back, crossing her arms. "You know, it’s easy to put up walls, Aaron. But you have to understand that I’m not the enemy here. I just want to make sure we’re all on the same page, especially for the baby." As I stared at her, the tension hung thick in the air. I could sense her determination, but it felt twisted, like she was pulling the strings of a game I didn’t want to play. But Heather had told me to keep my cool, to see where this led. I was going to have to dig deeper, and I’d have to do it carefully. "So, what’s your plan, then?" I asked, trying to stay focused. "How do we move forward from here?" Veronica paused, her eyes narrowing slightly as she considered her words. "We’ll need to figure out the next steps together. I can help you navigate this, Aaron. If you’re really serious about your future and about this baby, then we need to work as a team." I wasn’t convinced, but I nodded, ready to play the part. If she thought she could manipulate me, she had another thing coming. I was going to find out the truth, no matter what it took. I just hoped I was ready for whatever game she was playing.
