Chapter Thirteen: A Sudden Change of Heart

1388 Words
The weeks that followed brought Claire and Ethan closer than ever. They had settled into a rhythm, one that was filled with laughter, love, and a sense of security that Claire had longed for. It felt like nothing could break them anymore, and for the first time in a long time, Claire allowed herself to fully embrace the future. But in the back of her mind, there was a quiet fear—a whisper that told her nothing was ever as perfect as it seemed. Morning Bliss One Saturday morning, Claire awoke to the soft sound of rain tapping against the window. The sky was a pale grey, casting a cool light over the room. She could hear Ethan moving around in the kitchen, the sound of pans clattering as he prepared breakfast. A smile spread across her face as she stretched, savouring the quiet moment. She felt content—truly happy, and it wasn’t just because of Ethan. For the first time in years, she felt like she was in control of her life. Her job was going well, her friendships were strong, and the love she shared with Ethan was more than she could have ever hoped for. As she slipped out of bed and made her way to the kitchen, she paused in the doorway to watch Ethan. He was standing at the stove, wearing his favourite old t-shirt, humming softly to himself as he cooked. Claire’s heart swelled with affection for him, the warmth of love filling every corner of her chest. “Good morning,” she said, her voice soft. Ethan turned and smiled at her, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Good morning, beautiful. I made pancakes.” Claire laughed, walking over to him and wrapping her arms around his waist. “You spoil me.” “You deserve it,” Ethan said, kissing the top of her head. They sat down at the table, eating in comfortable silence, the rain continuing to fall gently outside. Claire watched Ethan, her mind drifting as she thought about how far they had come. There was something so reassuring about their life together now—something that made her feel like they could weather any storm. But there was a nagging feeling in the pit of her stomach, one she couldn’t quite shake. An Unsettling Revelation Later that afternoon, as they sat curled up on the couch watching a movie, Claire’s phone buzzed on the coffee table. She glanced at it, expecting a text from a friend, but when she saw the name on the screen, her heart dropped. It was Lily—Ethan’s ex. Claire’s stomach twisted as she stared at the name. They hadn’t heard from Lily in years, not since she and Ethan had broken up. Why was she reaching out now? And what could she possibly want? Ethan noticed the change in Claire’s expression and frowned. “What’s wrong?” Claire hesitated for a moment before showing him the screen. “It’s Lily. She texted me.” Ethan’s face darkened slightly, a wave of something unreadable passing through his eyes. “What does she want?” “I don’t know,” Claire said, unlocking her phone to read the message. Her hands shook slightly as she opened the text. “Claire, we need to talk. It’s important. Please call me.” Claire’s heart raced as she read the message again, trying to make sense of it. Why would Lily want to talk to her? And why did it feel so urgent? Ethan leaned forward, tension radiating from him. “Don’t call her, Claire. Whatever she has to say, it’s not important. She’s probably just trying to stir up drama.” Claire bit her lip, unsure of what to do. Part of her wanted to ignore the message, to take Ethan’s advice and not let Lily back into their lives. But another part of her—the part that had always valued honesty—felt like she needed to hear what Lily had to say. “I don’t know,” Claire said slowly. “Maybe I should talk to her, just to see what she wants.” For the first time in a long time, Claire saw a flash of anger in his eyes. “Claire, please. Don’t do this. She’s not part of our lives anymore. Don’t let her mess things up for us.” Claire looked at him, startled by the intensity in his voice. “Ethan, I’m not trying to mess anything up. I just… I need to know why she’s reaching out.” Ethan stood up, running a hand through his hair. “I can’t believe this. After everything we’ve been through, you’re considering talking to her?” Claire stood up as well, her heart skipping in her chest. “Ethan, calm down. I just want to understand what’s going on.” Ethan turned to her, his eyes flashing with frustration. “Fine. Do whatever you want, Claire. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.” And with that, he stormed out of the room, leaving Claire standing there, stunned. A Conversation She Never Expected Later that evening, after Ethan had cooled down, Claire found herself sitting on the edge of the bed, her phone in her hand. She stared at the screen, her finger hovering over Lily’s contact. Part of her knew that calling Lily might open a door she didn’t want to walk through. But another part of her—the part that hated secrets—couldn’t let it go. With a deep breath, she pressed Call. The phone rang twice before Lily picked up. Her voice was soft, almost hesitant. “Claire. I’m glad you called.” Claire’s heart raced as she spoke. “What do you want, Lily? Why did you text me?” There was a pause on the other end, and Claire could hear Lily take a deep breath before speaking again. “I’m sorry to do this, but you need to know something about Ethan.” Claire’s blood ran cold. “What are you talking about?” Lily hesitated again, and when she finally spoke, her voice was filled with sadness. “Ethan and I… we’ve been talking. For a while now.” Claire felt like the ground had been ripped out from under her. Her mind reeled as Lily’s words echoed in her ears. “What do you mean you’ve been talking?” Claire whispered, her voice shaking. “We never really stopped,” Lily admitted quietly. “I thought he’d told you, but I guess he hasn’t. I’m sorry, Claire. I never wanted to hurt you, but I couldn’t keep this from you any longer.” Claire felt like she couldn’t breathe. Her vision blurred as tears filled her eyes, and she struggled to make sense of what she was hearing. “I don’t believe you,” Claire said, her voice trembling. “Ethan would never do that. He loves me.” “I know he does,” Lily said softly. “But you deserve to know the truth.” Claire ended the call abruptly, her hands shaking as she dropped the phone onto the bed. Her mind was spinning, her heart shattered into a million pieces. Could it be true? Had Ethan been lying to her this whole time? As she sat there, tears streaming down her face, Claire knew that nothing would ever be the same again. A Suspenseful Twist The front door opened, and Claire heard Ethan walk in. She wiped her tears quickly, not ready to confront him yet, but knowing she couldn’t avoid it forever. Her heart pounded as she heard his footsteps approach the bedroom. Ethan walked in, his face softening when he saw her. “Claire… I’m sorry about earlier. I shouldn’t have—” But Claire cut him off, her voice barely a whisper. “I talked to Lily.” Ethan froze, his expression changing in an instant. A flicker of panic crossed his face before he quickly masked it. “What did she tell you?” he asked, his voice tense. Claire looked up at him, her heart breaking all over again. “She told me the truth, Ethan. About you two. About everything.” Ethan stared at her, his face pale, and in that moment, Claire knew.
