Chapter Thirty-Five The room was suddenly engulfed in uncomfortable silence. Chap was not about to blow his sudden good fortune by admitting he had the money, and he was certainly not prepared to surrender it. It had never been his intention to keep it for his own use, but he was not about to tell them that; certainly not Schaefer, the smarmy, so-called diplomat. Also, he had no way of knowing who in the Commissioner’s office actually believed him when he said he had never seen the original of the document. Their expressions gave nothing away. However, exactly who believed him and who didn’t was a detail he was not going let concern him too greatly.
