Part 11: The decision to meet

974 Words
The quiet hum of the city echoed in the background as Ishaan sat at his desk, eyes glued to the screen, the glow from his phone illuminating his face in the dimly lit room. Conversations like this one had been a nightly ritual for him and Isha. Their bond, formed through years of countless messages, late-night calls, and shared moments, had grown deeper than either of them had expected. Meeting in person, however, was something they had always skirted around. Tonight, the conversation had taken on a different tone. There was something in the air—an unspoken sense that things were about to change. “You know,” Isha’s voice came through the phone, soft yet teasing, “we’ve been talking for years now. Don’t you think it’s about time we meet in person?” Ishaan’s heart skipped a beat. He had imagined this moment so many times, but hearing her say it out loud made it real. “Yeah,” he replied after a brief pause, “I guess we have been dodging that for a while, huh?” Isha’s laugh was light, but there was something serious beneath it. “Exactly. I feel like we know each other so well already, but it’s still not the same as seeing each other face to face.” Ishaan nodded, though she couldn’t see him. He had thought about this for so long—what it would be like to meet her in real life, to hear her voice without the phone acting as a middleman, to see her smile right in front of him. “You’re right,” he said slowly, the weight of her words sinking in. “I think it’s time, too.” “So,” Isha continued, a playful tone returning to her voice, “how about this Sunday? There’s this place I’ve been wanting to go to called ‘The Bay View’ near Marine Drive. It’s got this gorgeous view of the bay. What do you think?” Ishaan’s heart raced. The idea of finally meeting her—seeing her smile, hearing her laugh in person—was thrilling and terrifying at the same time. He pictured the café she was talking about. He knew it well, with its large windows overlooking the shimmering waters of the Arabian Sea. It was a quiet, cozy place, perfect for a first meeting after all these years. “That sounds perfect,” Ishaan said, trying to keep his voice steady. “I’ve always wanted to check that place out.” “Great!” Isha said, her excitement infectious. “Sunday afternoon, then?” “Sunday afternoon at The Bay View,” Ishaan confirmed, his mind already racing ahead to what the day would be like. “I’ll be there. You can count on it.” “Good,” Isha teased, “because if you don’t show up, I’m going to order all the coffee they have and drink it alone.” Ishaan laughed, feeling a wave of nervous excitement wash over him. “No way I’m missing this.” “Are you nervous?” she asked suddenly, her tone softening. It was a question that caught him off guard, though he had been expecting it. “A little,” he admitted, his honesty surprising even himself. “I mean, we’ve been talking for so long, but it’s still kind of a big deal, isn’t it?” “It is,” Isha said gently. “But we’re just meeting, right? It’ll be like one of our calls, only this time, we’ll be looking at each other instead of a screen.” Ishaan smiled. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. It’s just… different.” “Different, but in a good way,” Isha agreed. “I’m really looking forward to it. I feel like we already know everything about each other, but I can’t wait to finally see you in person.” “Same here,” Ishaan said, his nerves slowly giving way to excitement. “It’s about time.” “I’ll even wear something cute,” Isha teased, her playful tone returning. “Oh?” Ishaan said with a grin. “Trying to impress me, huh?” “Maybe,” she said with a giggle. “Or maybe I just want to look good for myself. Who knows?” “Well, I’ll try not to look like a total mess,” Ishaan said, though he knew he’d be overthinking every detail of his appearance before Sunday. “You’ll be fine,” Isha reassured him. “Just be yourself, and everything will be great.” “Easy for you to say,” Ishaan muttered. “You’ve always got it together.” Isha laughed. “Trust me, I’m just as nervous as you are. But it’s a good kind of nervous, right?” “Yeah,” Ishaan agreed. “It’s a good kind of nervous.” “So, it’s settled then,” Isha said with finality. “Sunday afternoon, at The Bay View. Don’t bail on me, okay?” “I won’t,” Ishaan promised. “But you better not either.” “Are you kidding? I’ve been waiting for this day for years!” Isha exclaimed, her voice full of excitement. “I’m so ready for this.” “Me too,” Ishaan said softly. “I’ll see you on Sunday.” Verse Years of words, across the screen, Now they meet where seas are seen. In whispered calls, their bond did grow, But face to face, the tides will show. The café waits, by ocean’s grace, To witness hearts, in time and space. No more the digital divide, Just him and her, side by side. A nervous heart, a joyful race, For in her eyes, he'll find his place. The Bay View beckons, calm yet wide, Where stories merge with the rising tide.
