CHAPTER ELEVEN: MARCO’S LOYALTY

1121 Words
The morning was quiet, but the mansion felt heavy. The kind of heavy that made every step echo. Marco walked ahead of Elara through the long halls. His face was calm, but she could feel the tension under it. In the first person my heart beat fast. Something felt wrong. Marco had not said a word since breakfast. He kept glancing at the closed doors, as if waiting for something to happen. “Marco,” I said softly. “What is it?” He didn’t answer at first. His jaw tightened. Then he said, “Dante gave an order last night. Something that involves you.” In the first person my stomach dropped. I felt my hands shake. “What kind of order?” He stopped. His back was to me. “He wants me to make sure you stay safe… by following him, no matter what.” “By following him?” I asked. “What does that mean?” He turned to look at me. His eyes were dark. “It means if I have to choose between you and him, I have to follow Dante.” In the first person my chest tightened. That sounded like a trap. “And what will you do?” Marco hesitated. He looked away. Then he said quietly, “I don’t know if I can do it. You mean too much. But Dante… he gave the order. If I disobey him…” I stepped closer. “Marco, listen to me. You don’t have to follow anyone blindly. Not even Dante. I trust you. You have to trust yourself too.” He shook his head. “You don’t understand. I’ve been trained to follow orders. My past… my life was built on it. I can’t just break it.” In the first person I felt something I had never felt before. Sadness mixed with anger. “Your past is not my prison, Marco. We are here now. You can make a choice.” Marco’s eyes softened. “You are right. But choices always have a price. I learned that the hard way.” In third person Elara watched him. She had never seen Marco like this. Usually so calm, so in control. But now he looked small, almost human. Vulnerable. He sighed. “When I was a boy, my family… they were caught in something bigger than them. They paid for the loyalty of others. I swore I would never be weak like that. That is why I follow orders. That is why I follow Dante. But now…” He trailed off. The words hung in the air. In the first person I stepped closer. “Now you follow me,” I said. “Because protecting me is not a weakness. It is strength.” Marco looked at me long and hard. For a moment, I thought he might say no. Then his shoulders relaxed. “You are right,” he said finally. “I will protect you. Even if it means going against Dante.” In third person Elara felt relief wash over her. But she knew it would not be simple. Loyalty in this world was never free. There was always a price. “Then we do this together,” I said, taking his hand. “Whatever comes, we face it together.” Marco nodded. “Yes. Together.” The mansion was quiet, but danger lurked in every shadow. Guards moved silently along the halls. The walls themselves seemed to watch. Elara knew that their safety was fragile. Every step could be a test. In the first person I thought about Dante. If he discovered Marco’s choice… what would happen? I shivered. But I did not show it. Fear could not control me anymore. Not now. Marco noticed my expression. “You are thinking about him,” he said. “I can handle Dante. You focus on what you need to do. I will take care of the rest.” In the first person I felt grateful. “Thank you, Marco. I… I don’t know what I would do without you.” He shrugged. “I’ve done this before,” he said. “But never for anyone like you.” In third person the two of them moved down the hall. The mansion seemed to shift around them, shadows stretching and bending. Every door, every corner held secrets. And now Marco carried one more secret—the choice he had made. They reached the library. Dust floated in the air from a window left open overnight. Marco paused at the doorway. “You should know something else,” he said. “Protecting you is not just about keeping you alive. It is about keeping your enemies guessing. They think Dante has control over you. But now, so do we.” In the first person my mind raced. “We?” “Yes,” he said. “You and me. We decide what happens next. Not them. Not Dante. Us.” I felt a strange weight lift. For the first time since the contract ended, I felt like I had an ally I could trust completely. Marco had chosen me. His loyalty was no longer to orders. It was to me. But I also knew the cost. The mansion was still dangerous. The shadows still moved. The enemies outside waited. And the world of blood and fear we lived in would not forgive disobedience lightly. Marco turned to me. “You have to understand. If Dante finds out, it will not be easy. He will test me. He will test us both.” In the first person I nodded. “Then we prepare. We do not wait for him. We act first.” Marco smiled faintly. “That is why you survive. That is why you are not a pawn.” In third person Elara felt a new determination. She had learned the rules. She had learned courage. Now she would see what loyalty truly meant—and she would see the price it demanded. In the first person I looked at Marco. “No matter what comes, we will stand. Together.” He nodded again. “Together.” The mansion seemed quieter now. But the quiet was only surface. Beneath it, danger pulsed like a heartbeat. Elara understood something clearly: loyalty was a weapon, a shield, and a chain. And Marco had chosen to bear it with her. In the first person I felt a fire inside me. Whatever came next, whatever tests awaited, I would not falter. Not now. Not ever. The game was far from over. But for the first time, I felt like I had a partner who would never betray me. And that made all the difference.
