Sia POV
Walking down the hall always heightened my sentimental side as the portraits of the past High Priestesses lined the light-gray coloured walls that contrasted the dark wooden floors. This coven is one of the oldest still standing that managed to keep the traditional elegant feel. Long hallways with perched candelabras, wooden trimming and handmade furniture.
My mother's portrait was meant to be on these walls, celebrated like the others, but that space was filled with a portrait of another. Mom chose to leave the coven to go live with her mate. An understanding decision at the time. Of course, no one could have foreseen what he was going to do or how things would turn out.
The Eastern Coven practiced white magic and was known for maintaining purity in witchcraft. This was not to be mistaken for passivity. This coven was fierce and built like a fortress. Our defenders were among the strongest amongst the remaining convents and our council was highly respected for their knowledge, tenure and practice of the craft.
I was headed to go see my aunt. Of course, it would be quicker to teleport, but I decided to walk over to her room instead. I knew my topic of conversation would not go over well. She did not agree with me leaving or finding my mate but the time, has come.
I took two deep breaths and knocked before entering. The silence hovered over a tension-filled room. She knew why I came.
"It’s time Aunty. Those rogues and vamps were searching for me. That wolf,” referring to the captured rogue that Blerim took care of, “seemed to have sensed Jinx. He zoned in on me during the interrogation. They have gotten too close. I need to go." I stated firmly.
"Sia, I love you like my own. How do you expect me to support you leaving? You are protected here. You have an entire coven to protect you." She paused, turning away from me. "I know this is more about finding your mate. But will this Alpha or his pack support you when trouble finds you?"
"Yes, I want my mate. Jinx believes that our mate is strong and powerful, but I also need to get to the bottom of this. He is searching for me. He is relentless. He will not stop terrorizing packs and covens until he finds me."
"So your plan is to what? Go to him to have a chat?! Are you mad, Sia? Look at what he did to your mother, his MATE? Sia please…you know Blerim would make a gr.."
"Blerim is a good friend but, that's all he is." She plopped down on her chaise, accepting defeat. "Tell me where the tracking on those vamps lead."
She glanced up at me before disclosing the location of my first stop.
Heading back to my room, I packed my enchanted shoulder bag which held so much more than it seemed. This was a parting gift and Aunt Lithia's way of giving me her blessing. After I changed into joggers, a hoodie and tennis shoes, which were perfect for travelling. If I had to shift, I could carry all my belongings in my mouth. Scanning the room to ensure I’m leaving nothing behind that I need, I hear a knock at the door.
Blerim.
I opened my door hesitantly, allowing him inside my room. He smiled and scanned me from head to toe.
“You look…comfortable.” He said, referencing my attire. I was usually in dresses and only wore joggers for training. Personally, I preferred to be in yoga pants, joggers, and shorts, but it was unlady-like among the coven leaders.
His eyes searched my room, quickly landing on my bag on the chair by the bed. “Are you going for a run or heading to the gym?”
I sighed. I really hated lying to him. He was such a great friend and I kept half of my heritage from him. As much as I knew he would be understanding of my situation, Aunt Lillith thought it best not to disclose it. Jinx was let out once a week between shift changes and in down times. I helped Blerim develop the schedule for the defenders so it was easy to squeeze in loop holes to my benefit.
I know Blerim knew there was something different about me but he did not know the details and I needed to keep it that way.
“Blerim…I… I’m not going running or to the gym. I…”
“You’re leaving. Aren’t you?” His voice broke and his expression was dejected, but his eyes did not meet mine.
“I have some things to take care of.” It was not a lie. I spared him the details.
“And you weren’t going to tell me? You were just going to disappear? What could be so urgent, that you could not even talk to me about it?” He walked over to me and pressed his forehead against mine with his brown eyes now searching mine for answers.
“Blerim…I wish I could explain mo-”
“Just tell me what’s going on.” He urged, his tone desperate. “Does this have to do with the attack? I saw how that piece of s**t rogue looked at you.” He pressed, rubbing his fingers along my forearm.
“This is not a good idea,” I said, pulling out of his embrace. “I have…unfinished business to go take care of."
"Very well, I will come with you."
"No Blerim. I'll be doing this on my own."
"So you are leaving, but you will not tell me where. You have business to take care of but you will not tell me what and you want to go do this all alone." He paused, analyzing the situation. "Are you crazy Sia? Let me help you!"
"Bler, you are needed here. I will be fine. No need to worry about me." I gave him a half smile, hoping he would drop it.
"How do I just let you leave me like this? What if you need…anything? At least tell me…something." His voice was desperate and eyes pleading.
"I need to find…someone, so that I can settle something and I need to do this alone."
There was a shift in his demeanour. He averted his pleading eyes and seemed to be the cool, collected Blerim that everyone else knew. He brushed his fingers on my bag and glanced up at me.
"Very well Sia. Whatever you have to do, please be safe. You can reach out to me…anytime…just say the word and I'm there."
He walked over and kissed me on the forehead and left. It was unlike him to just give in like that, but I could not worry about that right now. I grabbed one of the vials from my bag, slung the bag strap over my shoulder and headed outside. I dug in my bag and unzipped a pocket to check the time on my phone; it was 9:40pm which was the perfect time to leave. I cursed myself for installing the magic sensor alarms last year. It would have been so easy to just teleport out but that would set off alarms to all the defenders, attracting unwanted attention.
The rotation change was between 9:45 - 10pm. A few minutes passed and the new guards arrived to get a briefing. As they huddled away from their post, I downed the contents of the vial and snuck through the gate headed into the forest. Once safely away from the coven, I undressed, got on my hands and knees and shifted into Jinx. Damn, it felt free being in the forest in wolf form, the wind going through her fur and feeling the soil beneath her feet.
The tracking spell showed that they were headed south. We were heading into wolf territory and Jinx did not belong to a pack. Due to Aunt Lithia's concoction in the vials, we had no scent so they could not pin us as a rogue, but it would raise suspicion if we were caught by any pack. The nearest pack was a few hours away. Moon Stone Pack, here we come. Jinx took off in the forest, enjoying the freedom as the wind whipped through her fur.
Finally being able to roam freely, Jinx lit a trail as she glided over raised tree roots, fallen trees and any obstacle in her way. I knew she was strong, but I did not realize how fast she was. Taking in the forest through her eyes, I feel how the smells that fill her nose, the different sounds coming together to form musical notes are so pleasing to her. She yips and kicks her legs, lurching us faster through the woods.
My heart hurts feeling how restricted she felt being deprived of this freedom for so many years. The short distance and time we could afford at the coven was risky enough; we could not let them detect her. I brush that aside and bask in her joy at the moment. She slowed, her ears peaked. I notice the sounds of water trickling and Jinx takes off in the direction. She trots over to a stream and starts lapping up the cool refreshing water, and we decide to rest for a bit.
Jinx…I’m sorry. I whispered in her mind. I promise, things will get better. We will find our mate and avenge our mother.
Girl, it’s been a rough road but I feel what you feel and I know why you had to hide me. There’s no need for apologies.
I’m so lucky to have you. So- She cuts me off,
What do you think our mate will be like? I can’t wait to meet him. Do you think he will like me? I mean he would be stupid not to…
I’m gorgeous and fast and fluffy and … I’m just amazing! Right Sia? She rambles out. I rolled my eyes at her.
Is that all you can think about Jinx? You are gorgeous and I’m sure our mate will see that but…I worry that he might be like- She cuts me off again.
Nope! Our mate is NOTHING like him! He can’t be Sia. The Moon Goddess would not doom us to such a horrible repeated fate. He will love us. You may need to get a new wardrobe though.
Jinx! I chastise her and she barks-giggles at me. You know these damn dresses are not my style, but it was the best way to blend in with the Coven ranking members.
Don’t get mad. I’m just saying…the dresses suck but…your joggers do nothing for our curves.
I’m not having this conversa- Jinx ears peak and I hear shuffles ahead in the forest.
Wolves.
Shit.
I shift back to my human form, grab clothes from my bag and get dressed, throwing the bag back over my shoulder. The sounds get closer. I teleport into a nearby tree on an upper branch and wait.
Two wolves appear from behind the trees. They don't smell like rogues, so I must have crossed into pack territory. s**t! Jinx and I were so caught up discussing our mate, that I did not realize we had entered the pack lands.
We need to be more careful, Jinx. This cannot happen again. We are alone out here.
We will be more alert. I will watch out for us better.
We listened keenly. The footsteps were right below us. There was some shuffling, bones cracking and three well-built, muscle–defined men emerged from behind the trees. They headed for the stream Jinx was just drinking from.
"You call yourself a tracker Leo? Your so-called skills just led us nowhere. There's nobody here!" The taller of the two muscles chastised the other, whose name is apparently Leo.
"Don’t piss me off, Gio. The scent dies off here. There was definitely someone or some-thing here.” Gio was not convinced that his senses had led him astray. I stifled a giggle at their bickering.
“Something, Gio? What the hell, we just chased this ‘scent’ that you thought seemed off and now you have no idea what we chased.” He used air quotes for the word scent.
“Alpha said be on guard for anything strange after the attack we just had. So yea, a strange scent piqued my attention. We were lucky that our patrols were prepared. You heard what happened to Gold Moon?”
“Yeah man, I heard. It’s weird. Rogues and vampires working together? They must be on some kind of a mission or something to be working together. I wonder what they want.” Leo questioned while nudging Gio to head back.
“I don’t care what they want. As long as they stay away from our pack.” They walked off in the direction they came from, no doubt, to finish up their patrol.
The scent blocker Aunt Lithia made obviously worked on wolves also. I knew it worked against witches, but with the heightened sense of smell, I wondered about wolves. They can sense Jinx but they can’t pin-point exactly where we were. This will definitely work in my favour as long as we take it every 12 hours and keep out of sight. We decided to trek along the stream since pack lands are known to border each other closer to lakes, rivers or streams.
Looks like our next stop is Gold Moon pack.
