The Letter

The first thing Amara Vale noticed when she walked into her mother's bedroom was the silence. It was the kind of silence that made a house feel unfamiliar. For twenty-two years, this room had been her mother's sanctuary. The curtains were always open in the morning, the little wooden clock on the bedside table always ticking, and the scent of lavender had always lingered in the air. Tonight, everything felt different. Her mother's death had left the room untouched. Amara stood beside the bed, clutching the sleeve of her sweater as tears threatened to return. "Mom," she whispered. She still couldn't bring herself to speak about her in the past tense. A knock came from the doorway. "Amara?" She turned. Her aunt, Margaret, stood there with a solemn expression. "You should try to get some rest." "I can't." Margaret hesitated. "There is something you need to know." Amara frowned. "What?" Her aunt stepped into the room and closed the door behind her. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Margaret reached inside her handbag and pulled out a small envelope. "Your mother asked me to give you this after she was gone." Amara stared at it. There was no name written on the front. Only a small black symbol that looked like a crown. "Why didn't she give it to me herself?" "She wanted you to have it when the time was right." Amara's heart tightened. "What does that mean?" "I don't know everything." Margaret's voice became quieter. "And perhaps it's better if you read it yourself." Amara slowly took the envelope. Her fingers trembled as she opened it. Inside was a single sheet of paper. Her mother's handwriting covered the page. My dearest Amara, If you're reading this, then I can no longer protect you from the truth. Amara stopped breathing for a moment. She read the next line. The family you grew up believing was yours is not your biological family. Her eyes widened. "No." Margaret looked away. Amara continued reading. I never abandoned you. I took you away because someone wanted you gone. Her hands began to shake. Your real name is Amara Blackwood. The paper slipped from her fingers. Blackwood. The name was impossible to misunderstand. Everyone in the country knew the Blackwoods. Blackwood Enterprises was one of the most powerful corporations in the country. Its chairman had built an enormous empire, and his son, Adrian Blackwood, had become one of the youngest and most feared CEOs in the business world. Amara looked at her aunt. "Is this true?" Margaret didn't answer immediately. That was answer enough. "Why would Mom hide this from me?" "Because she believed it was the only way to keep you alive." Amara's stomach twisted. "Alive from whom?" "I don't know." "You have to know something." Margaret shook her head. "Your mother never told me everything. She only told me that powerful people were looking for you." Amara picked up the letter again. At the bottom was another sentence. Do not trust the Blackwoods. Her heart sank. Then she noticed something else. A second piece of paper had been folded behind the letter. She opened it. There was an address. Blackwood Enterprises. And underneath it, a name. Adrian Blackwood. Amara stared at it. "Why would she send me to him if she told me not to trust his family?" Margaret looked frightened. "I don't know." Amara folded the papers and slipped them into her pocket. For the first time since her mother's death, something stronger than grief began to replace the emptiness inside her. Questions. Hundreds of them. Who was she? Why had her mother hidden her identity? Who had wanted her gone? And why was Adrian Blackwood involved? --- Across the city, Adrian Blackwood stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office. The city glittered beneath him. His assistant, Daniel, placed a folder on his desk. "There's something you need to see." Adrian didn't turn around. "What is it?" "A woman." That got his attention. He turned slowly. "What woman?" Daniel opened the folder. "Amara Vale." Adrian's expression changed. He recognized the name. "Why are you investigating her?" "We received information this afternoon." Daniel slid a photograph across the desk. Adrian looked at it. A young woman stood outside a modest house, her expression tired but determined. There was something familiar about her. Something he couldn't explain. "She's been asking questions about the Blackwood family," Daniel said. Adrian's jaw tightened. "What kind of questions?" "About your father. About the company. And about a woman named Elena Vale." Adrian went completely still. Elena Vale. He hadn't heard that name in years. "Who gave you this information?" "We don't know." Adrian picked up the photograph again. Amara Vale. Twenty-two years old. Adopted daughter. No known connection to the Blackwoods. At least, that's what the records said. His phone suddenly rang. Adrian answered. "Yes?" An unfamiliar voice spoke on the other end. "She's found out." Adrian's eyes narrowed. "Who is this?" The caller ignored the question. "If you want to protect your family, keep Amara away from Blackwood Enterprises." The line went dead. Adrian stared at his phone. For the first time in years, uncertainty crossed his face. Someone was afraid of Amara. Someone knew her secret. And someone clearly didn't want Adrian to discover it. --- The next morning, Amara stood outside Blackwood Enterprises. The enormous glass building towered above her. She tightened her grip around her mother's letter. She had spent the entire night wondering whether coming here was a mistake. But she needed answers. The revolving doors opened. Amara stepped inside. A receptionist looked up. "Good morning. How may I help you?" "I need to see Adrian Blackwood." The receptionist immediately became cautious. "Do you have an appointment?" "No." "Mr. Blackwood doesn't accept unplanned visitors." Amara took a breath. "Tell him Amara Vale is here." The receptionist picked up the phone. A few seconds later, her expression changed. "Mr. Blackwood will see you." Amara's heart began to race. She had expected resistance. She hadn't expected him to agree so quickly. The elevator doors opened. She stepped inside. As the doors closed, Amara looked down at the letter in her hand. Her mother's final warning echoed in her mind. Do not trust the Blackwoods. She had no idea that the man waiting upstairs had already been warned about her. And she certainly didn't know that meeting Adrian Blackwood would be the beginning of a chain of secrets that would change both their lives forever.
