The Warning

Amara couldn't stop thinking about the phone call. Someone knew they were investigating. Someone had warned Adrian to stop looking for the hospital records. And somehow, that made the mystery surrounding her birth feel more dangerous than ever. She stood outside Blackwood Enterprises, staring at the enormous glass building behind her. "Amara." She turned. Adrian was walking toward her. "Are you going home?" he asked. "I don't know." "Then let me arrange a driver." "I can take care of myself." "I didn't say you couldn't." His voice was calm, but there was something different in his expression. Concern. Amara looked away. "Your family has secrets. My mother knew those secrets. And now someone is warning us to stop looking." "I know." "And you're still asking me to trust you." "I'm asking you to give me a chance to find the truth with you." Amara looked at him. For the first time, Adrian didn't look like the powerful CEO everyone described. He looked like someone who was also searching for answers. "Fine," she said. "But I want everything you find. No more hiding things from me." "You have my word." Before she could respond, Adrian's phone rang. He answered. "Daniel?" He listened for several seconds. "You're certain?" A pause. "Send me the address." He ended the call. Amara immediately noticed the change in his expression. "What happened?" "The hospital records were transferred to a private archive." "That's good, isn't it?" "Not exactly." "Why?" "The archive was accessed three months ago." Amara frowned. "By whom?" "We don't know." "Then how do we find out?" Adrian looked toward the road. "We go there." --- Two hours later, they arrived at a small records facility on the outskirts of the city. It looked nothing like Amara had expected. There was no impressive building or expensive security system. Just an old brick structure surrounded by a metal fence. Daniel was already waiting for them. "I spoke to the manager," he said. "And?" "He remembers the file." Amara stepped forward. "Where is it?" Daniel hesitated. "Missing." Her stomach dropped. "What do you mean missing?" "The records from that year are incomplete." "Someone took them?" "We can't prove that." Adrian looked at him. "Who accessed the archive three months ago?" Daniel handed him a document. "The request came under a legal authorization." Adrian read the page. Then his face went still. "What?" Amara reached for the document. She read the name printed at the bottom. Richard Blackwood. Her eyes widened. "Your father?" Adrian didn't answer. "Adrian." "My father has been dead for years." "Then how could he authorize anything three months ago?" "I don't know." Daniel stepped closer. "There's another problem." Adrian looked at him. "The signature is authentic." Silence filled the room. Amara looked between them. "That doesn't make sense." "No," Adrian said quietly. "It doesn't." Daniel pulled out another document. "We checked the legal records. Someone has been using your father's old authorization code." "Who?" "We haven't identified them yet." Amara suddenly felt cold. Someone wasn't simply hiding her past. Someone was actively protecting it. And they had access to Adrian's family's private records. "Can we find out where the missing files went?" she asked. Daniel shook his head. "Not yet." Adrian looked at Amara. "We need to leave." "Why?" He didn't answer. Then Amara heard it. A sound outside. A car engine. She looked through the window. A black vehicle had stopped across the street. Nobody got out. Adrian immediately moved toward the door. "Stay here." Amara followed him. "I'm not staying behind." "Amara—" "I'm involved now." Adrian stopped arguing. Daniel checked the window again. "The car is gone." Amara's heart was pounding. "Who was inside?" "We don't know." Adrian looked toward the road. Then his phone buzzed. A message. He opened it. His expression changed. Amara stepped closer. "What is it?" Adrian turned the screen toward her. There was a photograph. It showed Amara standing outside Blackwood Enterprises earlier that day. Taken from a distance. Underneath the photograph was a message: You were warned. Amara stared at the screen. "They're following me." Adrian's jaw tightened. "Apparently." Another message appeared. This time, it contained an old photograph. Amara's mother, Elena, stood beside the mysterious man from the first photograph. But this time, Amara noticed something she hadn't seen before. Elena was holding a baby. And behind them stood Adrian's father. Amara's breath caught. "That's your father." Adrian stared at the photograph. His face became unreadable. Then Amara noticed writing on the bottom of the image. A date. The same date she was born. And beneath it, four words: THE CHILD WAS HIS. Amara looked at Adrian. "Whose child?" Adrian didn't respond. Because somewhere deep inside, he already knew the answer could change everything. Suddenly, Daniel's phone rang. He answered. His face went pale. "Mr. Blackwood..." Adrian turned. "What?" Daniel swallowed. "The archive manager has disappeared." The room fell silent. Amara looked down at the photograph. For twenty-two years, she had believed her life was simple. Now every answer seemed to create another question. And somewhere, someone was determined to make sure she never discovered the truth. But Amara had made her decision. She was no longer running from the past. She was going to uncover it. No matter what it revealed.
