The Hidden Name

The words on the photograph refused to leave Amara's mind. THE CHILD WAS HIS. She stared at the image while Adrian stood silently beside her. "Who does that mean?" she finally asked. Adrian took the photograph from her. "I don't know." "You keep saying that." "Because it's the truth." Amara folded her arms. "Your father was standing behind my mother on the night I was born. You have a photograph of me as a baby. Your family has been hiding records about that night. And now someone sends us a photograph claiming that I was his child." Adrian looked at the photograph again. "There's only one way to find out." "How?" "My father's personal records." "Didn't you already search them?" "Not completely." Adrian turned toward Daniel. "Take us to the old residence." Daniel looked surprised. "Tonight?" "Yes." --- The old Blackwood residence stood several kilometres outside the city. Unlike Blackwood Enterprises, it was not modern or impressive. It was an enormous old house surrounded by tall trees and a stone wall. Adrian unlocked the front door. The house was dark and quiet. Amara followed him inside. "Your father lived here?" "Until the last years of his life." "What happened to everything after he died?" "Most of his belongings were moved into storage." "Most?" Adrian looked at her. "There were some things he specifically instructed the family never to touch." Amara stopped. "Where?" "The study." They walked down a long hallway. Adrian opened a wooden door. The study was filled with shelves, old books and several locked cabinets. Daniel switched on the lights. Adrian walked toward the largest cabinet. "There." A small metal box sat on the bottom shelf. He unlocked it. Inside were documents, photographs and several handwritten notes. Amara carefully looked through them. Then she saw a name. Elena Vale. Her hands stopped. "Adrian." He came closer. "What?" She handed him the document. It was a letter written by Adrian's father. The first sentence made Amara's heart race. Elena, I never intended for the child to be taken from you. Amara looked at Adrian. "Read the rest." He continued. The letter explained that Elena had discovered something about a major business deal involving the Blackwood family. She had threatened to expose it. But Adrian's father claimed that someone else had interfered. Someone who wanted Elena silent. Amara read the next line. If anything happens to me, protect my son. He must never learn who betrayed us. Adrian's expression changed. "Who betrayed you?" Amara whispered. He continued reading. But the next page was missing. Amara looked through the box. Nothing. "Someone removed it." Adrian nodded. Then Daniel noticed something. "Mr. Blackwood." He pointed toward the back of the cabinet. "There." A small envelope had fallen behind the shelves. Adrian pulled it out. There was only one name written on the front. AMARA. Amara froze. "That's my name." Adrian handed it to her. She hesitated before opening it. Inside was a birth certificate. Her name appeared clearly. Amara Blackwood. Her mother's name was listed underneath. Elena Blackwood. Amara's hands began to shake. "Blackwood?" Adrian stared at the document. "That means my father knew." "Knew what?" "That you were a Blackwood." Amara looked at the final line. The father's name was not listed. Instead, there was a handwritten note. The father's identity must remain hidden until Amara is old enough to protect herself. Amara's eyes filled with confusion. "Why would someone hide my father's identity?" Adrian had no answer. Then Daniel spoke. "There may be another document." He pointed toward the bottom of the box. Adrian removed a small black notebook. The first pages contained financial notes. Then they found a list of names. One name had been circled. Marcus Vale. Amara stared at it. "Who is Marcus Vale?" Daniel looked at Adrian. Adrian shook his head. "I don't know." Amara suddenly remembered something. Her mother had once mentioned the name. Only once. Years ago. Amara had been a child, and Elena had immediately changed the subject. "Marcus..." Amara whispered. Adrian looked at her. "You know him?" "I don't know him. But I've heard that name before." "From your mother?" Amara nodded. Before she could explain, a loud sound came from downstairs. Everyone froze. Daniel immediately looked toward the hallway. "Did you hear that?" Adrian closed the notebook. "Stay here." Amara shook her head. "I'm coming with you." They walked downstairs together. The front door was still locked. Nothing appeared to be out of place. Then Daniel noticed an envelope lying on the floor. It hadn't been there before. Adrian picked it up. There was no name. Only a single sentence written across the front: YOU FOUND THE NAME. NOW FIND THE MAN. Amara looked at Adrian. "Marcus Vale." Adrian nodded. "That's our next lead." But as he turned the envelope over, something fell onto the floor. A small photograph. Amara picked it up. It showed a young man standing beside Elena. She stared at his face. She had never met him. But she recognized his eyes. They were the same eyes she saw every morning when she looked in the mirror. Amara's voice barely came out. "That's him." Adrian looked at the photograph. "Marcus Vale." Amara turned the photograph over. There was one final message. He isn't dead. Her heart stopped. For twenty-two years, she had believed her father was simply a name that had never been given to her. Now she knew something far more shocking. Her father was alive. And someone had spent her entire life making sure she never found him.
