THE KISS IN THECOURTYARD

569 Words
Moonlight bathed the stone pathways of the royal courtyard in a soft, silvery glow. The garden was quiet at this late hour, save for the gentle rustle of leaves and the occasional hoot of an owl perched high above. Princess Elena moved through the hedges with measured steps, the weight of the day pressing heavily on her shoulders. The layers of silk and jewels she wore at the evening banquet felt like armor now—ornate, suffocating, and meant to restrain more than protect. She paused near the old fountain, its water glimmering beneath the moon. It had always been her sanctuary, this secluded part of the palace grounds—hidden from prying eyes, untouched by courtly whispers. “Elena.” She spun at the voice, startled. Prince Adrian emerged from behind a marble pillar, his dark cloak blending with the night. His hair was tousled, his eyes reflecting the same restless energy that pulsed through her. “You shouldn’t be here,” she said softly, but made no move to leave. “Neither should you.” A faint smile tugged at the corner of her lips, but it was laced with sadness. “And yet here we are.” He stepped closer, the air between them electric. “I couldn’t leave without seeing you again.” Her breath caught. “You’re leaving?” “Tomorrow,” he said. “Back to Thornewood. My father’s summoning me early. He suspects… something.” She looked down, heart pounding. “They all suspect something.” Adrian reached out, but paused just short of touching her. “Elena, I know we barely know each other. But when I’m near you, nothing else makes sense. It’s madness—wanting you like this.” “Then we’re both mad,” she whispered, meeting his gaze. “Because I feel it too.” The silence stretched. The scent of night-blooming jasmine curled between them like a promise. Finally, she reached for him—just lightly, her fingertips brushing his hand. “I’m betrothed,” she said, voice shaking. “To a man I do not love. A man who sees me as a prize.” “And I’m promised to a woman who wears the crown like a dagger,” he replied bitterly. Her fingers curled around his. “This can’t happen,” she said, but her eyes pleaded otherwise. “I know.” And then he kissed her. It wasn’t the kind of kiss they were supposed to have. It was full of desperation and longing, the kind that bloomed only in stolen moments. His hands cupped her face gently, reverently. Her fingers tangled in the fabric of his cloak, pulling him closer as though the world would fall apart if they let go. When they finally broke apart, breathless, Elena took a shaky step back. “This changes everything,” she whispered. Adrian’s eyes were fierce. “Let it.” Before either could speak again, a shadow passed behind the hedge. Both froze. The sound of retreating footsteps echoed faintly through the darkness. Elena's heart sank. Someone had seen them. Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Be careful, Elena.” “I always am,” she said, though the trembling in her hands betrayed her. He stepped back, fading into the night like a dream. And she was left standing alone by the fountain, lips tingling, heart torn, and the world she knew forever changed.
