A dog barked in the distance. It was the first connection to other humans in the hours since we saw Eli’s car. East grabbed Jonah’s arm in panic. “The electric fence won’t be working,” she said, her voice shaking. At that moment a large black dog appeared out of nowhere. He charged, growling and snarling. Jonah lunged forward, getting in front of East. He clenched the duffel bag in front of him. It would be his weapon.
