The storm passed by dawn, leaving the forest drenched and still.
Patrick stood at the edge of the shrine, the rising sun cutting through the mist. Four faint tails shimmered behind him, their glow dim but steady.
Each one carried a fragment of memory-and of guilt.
He turned to Aiko. “You said the seals were scattered. Do you know where the first one is?”
She nodded hesitantly. “I think so. My grandmother used to tell stories about a place called Tsukigane Temple. It was built above a cave that glows with blue fire. She said that’s where the first tail was bound.”
Patrick’s eyes narrowed. “A temple of moonlight… fitting for a prison built by gods.”
He blinked. “You’re coming?”
“Someone has to make sure you don’t burn the world down again,” she said, forcing a small smile.
Patrick couldn’t help it-a faint laugh escaped him, quiet but real. “You’re braver than you should be.”
“Someone had to be,” she replied.
The Journey Begins
They set out through the mountain trails, following the river that wound toward the lowlands. The forest gradually changed-the air grew colder, the trees older. Strange symbols marked the rocks, glowing faintly as they passed.
“Wards,” Patrick murmured. “Old ones.
Someone’s still maintaining them.”
Aiko frowned. “Then we’re not the only ones who know about the temple.”
He nodded. “No. The hunters will move fast.”
The Hunter’s Pursuit
In the fortress below, Captain Renji prepared his unit. The High Seer’s orders were clear:
Retrieve the Fox’s first tail. Kill him if necessary.
Renji’s gaze turned cold. “Because the Goddess only saves those who prove worthy. The rest burn.”
He sheathed the sword. “We move at dusk.”
The Temple of Blue Fire
By nightfall, Patrick and Aiko reached the foothills. Mist pooled around the ruins of what once had been a magnificent temple. The air shimmered faintly, and ghostly blue flames floated like will-o’-wisps between the stones.
Patrick stepped forward, his aura reaching immediately-the air crackled. “It’s here.”
Aiko hesitated. “I don’t like this place.”
“Neither do I,” he admitted.
They entered the ruins. The deeper they went, the brighter the blue fire burned, until it formed a path leading down a spiral stair carved into earth.
At the bottom lay a vest cavern. In its center floated a crystal, cracked but still glowing-a fragment of divine power sealed by hundreds of ancient talismans.
Patrick stared at it, breath shallow. “My first tail…”
He reached out.
The air exploded.
Chains of blue light shot from the crystal, wrapping around him, binding his arms and throat. Voices whispered from the dark-angry, sorrowful, countless.
“You were supposed to protect us.”
“You burned us instead.”
“Monster.”
Patrick screamed as the energy surged through him, memories flooding back-flames, temples, screams, a thousand faces turning to ash.
Aiko cried out, running to him. “Patrick!”
But as she reached the barrier, a shadow stepped between them.
A man in silver armor. Sword drawn. Eyes like cold steel.
Captain Renji.
“Step aside, girl.”
Aiko froze. “Please-he’s not your enemy!”
Renji raised his sword. “He’s everyone’s enemy.”
Patrick’s eyes snapped open-burning gold through the blue flame. His voice came out as a growl and a plea at once.
“Aiko… run.”
The Moon Priestess Awakens
As the cavern filled with energy, far away in the Spirit Hunter’s fortress, the High Seer knelt before the Moon Goddess’s alter.
She lifted her mask, revealing eyes glowing with silver light.
“Mother of night, your vessel stirs. Guide me.”
The temple walls pulsed like a heartbeat.
“The fox approaches his truth,” the Goddess whispered through her.
“The moon will test his soul.”
Back in the cavern, the crystal shattered. Light and darkness erupted.
Patrick screamed as the first seal broke-his fifth tail unfurling in a burst of divine flame. The cavern roof cracked, the world itself trembling.
Renji was thrown backward, shielding his eyes.
When the light cleared, Patrick stood at the center-hair flowing like fire, five tails blazing behind him.
His voice echoed through the ruins:
“The seals won’t hold forever. If the gods made me to burn the world…”
“…then I’ll burn them first.”
