The chamber was cold, the air thick with the weight of unspoken truths. Kael and Erryn stood before the relic, the light from its glowing surface casting long shadows across the shattered throne room. The silence was deafening, each heartbeat a reminder of the burden they now carried.
“We’ve come this far,” Kael said, his voice strained. “But something feels... wrong. I can feel it in the relic. It’s like it’s holding back something, something I’m not ready to face.”
Elara glanced at him, her eyes filled with understanding. “I feel it too. There’s more to this place, more to the kingdom’s fall than we’ve been told. We’ve only seen the surface. The truth... it’s deeper.”
A sudden gust of wind swept through the open hall, sending a shiver down their spines. The relic’s glow flickered, and then, without warning, the voice they had heard before echoed through the chamber once more, louder this time, as if it were coming from within the very walls themselves.
“Do you think you can restore what was broken?” the voice boomed. “Do you believe the kingdom can be healed with your petty efforts? The truth of Veyrith’s fall lies in betrayal, and you will never escape it.”
Kael stepped forward, his hand gripping the relic tightly. “What do you mean? What betrayal?”
The voice was cold, filled with ancient sorrow. “The betrayal that tore the kingdom apart was not just from without, but from within. It was the royal bloodline itself that shattered Veyrith. One among you... one who claims to seek redemption, was the true cause of the Sundering.”
Erryn ’s heart skipped a beat. She turned to Kael, confusion and fear swirling in her chest. “Kael... what is it saying? What betrayal?”
Kael’s face had gone pale, his eyes wide with shock. “No... it can’t be. I—I didn’t...” He took a step back, his mind racing. The pieces were falling into place, but he didn’t want to believe it.
The voice continued, relentless in its revelation. “The blood of the royal family runs through your veins, Kael. You are the heir to the throne, the one who betrayed your kingdom to gain power, to claim the relics for yourself. It was you who caused the Sundering.”
Kael stumbled back, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The world around him seemed to tilt, the weight of the truth crashing down on him like a storm. “No... that’s not true. I—I don’t remember. I didn’t—”
Erryn ’s eyes widened, her voice trembling as she stepped toward him. “Kael, is it true? Are you... are you the one who—”
“No!” Kael shouted, his voice raw with pain. “I swear, I didn’t know. I didn’t remember. I couldn’t have... I would never...”
The relic in his hand pulsed violently, its light flashing erratically as if reacting to his turmoil. The ground beneath them trembled, and the voice spoke once more, softer now, almost mournful.
“You have always known, Kael. The mark on your arm... the relic... they are part of you. The power you seek to restore, the kingdom you want to heal, it is your own sins you must face.”
Erryn reached out to him, her face filled with compassion and confusion. “Kael, this isn’t you. You didn’t choose this. You’re not the person they’re describing.”
But Kael could hardly hear her. His mind was a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts, memories that felt like they were not his own, and the undeniable truth that he had been part of the kingdom’s destruction. The betrayal—the bloodline that had broken everything—was his.
He dropped to his knees, the weight of the revelation too much to bear. “I didn’t choose this,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “But I’m the one who has to fix it. I’m the one who has to make it right.”
Erryn knelt beside him, her hand on his shoulder. “We’ll do it together. We’ll face whatever comes next, Kael. You’re not alone.”
But as the words left her lips, a shadow passed over them both. The relic’s light flickered once more, and the voice spoke one last time, its tone filled with finality.
“The kingdom’s fate is sealed. The heir has returned, but the price of redemption is far greater than you understand. The Betrayer must be sacrificed, or the kingdom will remain broken forever.”
Kael’s heart sank, the weight of the voice’s words settling over him like a shroud. The path to redemption was clear, but the cost was something he wasn’t ready to face. Would he be the one to pay it? Or would the Broken Kingdom claim him, as it had claimed so many before?
