CHAPTER NINE:THE THIEF'S SECRET.

Erryn crept through the shadowed corridors of the old lighthouse, her lantern casting flickering light on the damp stone walls. The relic was gone, stolen in the chaos of the previous night’s storm. She had a name—Kael, the village’s elusive thief, who had been seen fleeing with the artifact. Kael’s hideout was a labyrinth of forgotten passageways beneath the lighthouse, filled with stolen trinkets and discarded treasures. Erryn found him sitting cross-legged on the floor, the relic glowing faintly in his hands. He looked up, his sharp green eyes filled with a mix of defiance and guilt. “You shouldn’t be here,” Kael said, his voice low. “This isn’t just some trinket, Erryn.” “I know what it is,” she replied, stepping closer. “And I know it doesn’t belong to you.” Kael hesitated, his fingers tightening around the relic. “Do you? Do you really know what this is? Because it’s more than a family heirloom or some magical stone. This is power—power your ancestors used to control the tides, to save this village. And it’s power that can destroy just as easily.” Erryn froze, her mind racing. “How do you know that?” Kael sighed, setting the relic down gently. “Because my family was there too. While yours were the guardians, mine were the ones who tried to take it. We were banished for it, cursed to live in the shadows of this village. But I’ve spent my life piecing together the truth. This relic isn’t just a tool—it’s a curse. It takes as much as it gives.” Erryn stared at him, her anger fading into confusion. “Then why steal it?” “Because the storm wasn’t natural,” Kael said, his voice rising. “The tides are rising because the relic is waking up. If it’s not controlled properly, it’ll destroy everything. I thought I could stop it, but…” He trailed off, looking at the glowing stone. Erryn stepped forward, her hand outstretched. “Then let me help. This isn’t just your burden to bear, Kael. It’s ours.” After a long pause, Kael nodded, handing her the relic. “Then we’ll do it together. But be ready, Erryn. The relic doesn’t forgive mistakes.” As they left the hideout, the relic pulsed in her hands, its energy a mix of promise and warning.
