Ines’ secrets

705 Words
Ines Calloway’s financial history, once Rhys’s people started pulling threads Vivienne couldn’t have found on her own, human records, shell companies, the unglamorous paperwork trail that even magic couldn’t shortcut, turned out to be more interesting than either of them expected. She wasn’t pack-born. That was the first surprise, buried in records that had clearly been paid to stay buried: Ines Calloway had joined the Marchetti pack seven years ago as a human executive hire, distinguished enough on paper to make the transition plausible, and had been quietly, informally bitten and folded into pack membership only eighteen months later, an irregular process, according to the pack elder Rhys consulted off the record, one that normally required council approval the Marchettis had apparently never filed for. “That’s not nothing,” Rhys said, laying the timeline out across the warehouse table where they’d taken to meeting most evenings now, a routine Vivienne hadn’t quite noticed forming until it already had. “An unauthorized turning is a council violation on its own. If Damon’s father approved it without filing, that’s leverage neither of us had a week ago.” “It’s more than leverage.” Vivienne traced the timeline with one finger, watching threads settle over the dates the way they’d started to whenever she focused, she was getting faster at it, less exhausted afterward, her father’s warnings about the toll of the magic proving so far more caution than immediate danger. “Look at when she was turned. Eighteen months after joining the pack. Six months before she was named COO. And…..” she paused, following a thread that sharpened as she reached the end of it, “…four months before Damon and I got married.” Rhys went still. “You think the turning and the marriage are connected.” “I think Ines Calloway was brought into this pack, turned, and promoted on a timeline that only makes sense if someone needed her fully embedded in Marchetti finances before Damon married a vampire whose family used to have real power. Someone wanted a second set of hands on the books that a Kess wife would never be allowed to touch.” Vivienne sat back, something cold settling into place behind her ribs, not the personal cold of betrayal this time, but something more clinical, more dangerous. “I don’t think Damon planned this. I think his father did. And Damon just fell in love with the woman his father positioned in front of him.” “That’s a hell of a theory.” “It’s not a theory. Look.” She turned the page toward him, tracing the thread she’d found, faint but unmistakable, the same texture as the frayed sixty-one-year-old debt she’d read in this same room days ago, except newer, deliberate, engineered rather than accumulated. “There’s a promise underneath the promotion. Someone told Ines Calloway that if she did this, the turning, the promotion, whatever she was asked to keep track of, she’d get something in return. Something bigger than a COO title.” “Get what?” Vivienne closed her eyes, chasing the thread further than she’d pushed it before, aware distantly of Rhys watching her with an intensity that had stopped being wary sometime in the last hour without her quite noticing when. The promise sharpened, resolved, and she opened her eyes with the answer already forming. “Control,” she said. “Not of Ines Calloway’s own pack position. Of the Marchetti pack’s finances entirely, if Damon’s father’s plan ever came apart, a contingency, built into her promotion from the start, that lets her step into financial control of Marchetti Holdings if the marriage between Damon and me ever failed publicly enough to threaten the pack’s standing.” Rhys sat back slowly. “So if Damon’s affair comes out….” “…..Ines doesn’t just get to keep sleeping with him. She gets the company.” Vivienne felt something settle into place, cold and clear, the shape of the whole scheme finally visible. “Damon isn’t just cheating on me, Rhys. He’s being used by his own mistress, engineered by his own father, and neither one of them has the faintest idea I can see the whole board.”
