twenty-seven ‘I’m so sorry.’ Elizabeth was standing at the door of the restaurant, sheltering beneath the canopy from a deluge of rain which had erupted from a slate grey sky. ‘It’s fine… honestly.’ Jason smiled. ‘I’ve enjoyed your company and it was nice to meet your family.’ ‘My family have embarrassed me,’ Elizabeth said, with a shake of her head. ‘None of this is your fault,’ Jason insisted. ‘And every family has fall-outs.’ The taxi driver honked his horn, in a show of impatience. ‘I should go,’ Jason said. ‘Maybe we could do this again? Just the two of us?’ ‘I’d like that,’ Elizabeth replied. He leaned closer and kissed her cheek. ‘I’ll see you next week.’ Disappointment coursed through Elizabeth.
