thirty-one After assuring Elizabeth had assured her friend that she was fine, Brian left for work with the promise that the three of them would meet up in the pub very soon. Elizabeth chewed her breakfast, not really tasting the fruity cereal. While she was in the shower, Harry rang for the fourth time and left another message on the answer machine. She could hear his voice, high-pitched with worry, asking if she was okay and when she’d be coming back to London. Elizabeth had told her sons that she needed some time back home alone and she’d deflected their questions, citing the excuse that she wasn’t feeling too good due to menopause symptoms, but she knew Harry hadn’t believed her.
