As they suspected, the interview was not going too well for Brenda Williams, who was protesting loudly at the way the inspector’s questioning was heading and demanded to see her lawyer. ‘You are perfectly within your rights to see your lawyer,’ agreed the inspector stolidly, ‘but wouldn’t it save a lot of time and effort if we could agree on the details of your movements on the night in question?’ Sensing the net was closing in around her, Brenda was beginning to panic. ‘I refuse to answer any more questions until I speak to my lawyer,’ was all she would say. ‘As you wish,’ accepted the long-suffering inspector. Lark, have you managed to contact him yet?’ ‘Not yet,’ was the harassed response. ‘Are you going to keep me here all night?’ demanded Brenda, expecting an answer. She sniffed.
