The penthouse door slammed behind Eleanor like a punctuation mark on her fury, the echo reverberating through the marble foyer. The cab ride from the hospital had been a storm of silent rage, her mind replaying the ultrasound wand's cold pressure, Julian's indifferent handshake with the doctor. She kicked off her heels, the sharp clack of them against the floor drawing Julian in from his study, briefcase still in hand. The city lights twinkled beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, indifferent to the fracture widening between them. "You tricked me," she spat, whirling on him as he entered the living room, his tie already loosened in post work relaxation. "A fertility test? You lied to get me there, Julian. Treated me like some lab rat for your mother's heir obsession. How could you?"
