I know because Theron's phone is on the kitchen counter when it buzzes — he left it there when he went to refill his coffee, which he does every morning, the same way, same cup, same small domestic routine that I've absorbed into my own without noticing — and I'm close enough to see the screen light up. I don't mean to read it. But it's right there and the preview is right there and by the time I've looked away I've already seen it. *Your Luna will leave you like the last one. They always do. Ask her why she really stayed.* I set my own cup down. Theron comes back with the coffee pot. He sees my face before he sees the phone. He sets the pot down and picks the phone up and reads the message and I watch his face do something I haven't
