Crescent Ridge Strikes

859 Words
The storm rolled in fast. Dark clouds gathered over Shadowpeak Valley, swallowing the afternoon sun and casting long shadows across the forest. Lyra stood near the training grounds with Mira, practicing scent masking on small objects — leaves, stones, even Mira’s bracelet. “You’re getting better,” Mira said, grinning. “I can barely smell the lavender on this now.” Lyra smiled shyly. “It’s easier when I’m calm.” Mira nudged her shoulder. “Good thing you have me. I’m very calming.” Lyra laughed softly. “You’re loud.” “Loud is calming,” Mira insisted. Lyra’s wolf purred with affection. Mira wasn’t just a friend — she was becoming family. But the moment shattered when a howl ripped through the valley. Not a Shadowpeak howl. Not a friendly call. A warning. Lyra stiffened. Mira’s smile vanished. Wolves around the training grounds froze, ears perked, eyes narrowing. Kayden’s voice boomed across the territory. “Everyone inside. Now.” Lyra’s heart lurched. “What’s happening?” Mira grabbed her hand. “Crescent Ridge.” Lyra’s blood ran cold. Before they could move, a Shadowpeak scout sprinted into the clearing, panting. “Alpha! Crescent Ridge wolves at the east border. They attacked our patrol.” Lyra’s breath hitched. “No…” Mira squeezed her hand. “Come on. We need to get you to safety.” But Lyra didn’t move. Her wolf surged forward, growling. Our pack is hurt. Kayden appeared at the edge of the clearing, his presence fierce and commanding. His eyes locked onto Lyra immediately. “Inside,” he ordered. “Now.” Lyra shook her head. “Someone’s hurt.” Kayden’s jaw tightened. “I know. And I’m handling it.” Lyra stepped forward. “Let me help.” Kayden’s expression flickered — fear, anger, protectiveness. “Lyra, no. You’re too important. Crescent Ridge wants you.” Lyra’s voice trembled. “But Shadowpeak needs me.” Kayden froze. Mira whispered, “Kayden… let her come. She’s not helpless.” Kayden looked torn, but another howl — sharp, pained — echoed through the valley. Lyra flinched. “Someone’s dying.” Kayden cursed under his breath. “Fine. Stay close to me.” Lyra nodded, her wolf already pushing forward. They ran toward the east border, Mira right behind them. The forest blurred around Lyra, her senses sharpening with every step. She could smell blood — Shadowpeak blood — thick and metallic in the air. When they reached the clearing, Lyra’s heart shattered. A Shadowpeak wolf lay on the ground, bleeding heavily from a deep gash along his side. His breathing was shallow, his eyes unfocused. Crescent Ridge wolves had already retreated, leaving destruction behind. Kayden dropped to his knees beside the injured wolf. “Hold on. We’ve got you.” Lyra knelt too, her hands trembling. “Kayden… he’s losing too much blood.” Kayden’s voice was tight. “Tessa is on her way.” But Lyra’s wolf pushed forward, howling inside her. Help him. Lyra reached out instinctively, placing her hand on the wolf’s wound. Kayden grabbed her wrist. “Lyra, don’t—” Light burst from her palm. Soft, warm, white light — the same glow that surrounded her during her shift — poured into the injured wolf. His breathing steadied. His muscles relaxed. The wound began to close, knitting together like invisible threads were pulling it tight. Kayden stared, stunned. “Lyra…” Lyra couldn’t hear him. The world narrowed to the wolf beneath her hand — his pain, his fear, his fading heartbeat. She poured everything she had into him, her wolf guiding her, her power flowing like water. The light intensified. Mira gasped. “She’s healing him.” Kayden’s voice was barely a whisper. “White wolf magic…” Lyra’s vision blurred, her body trembling with effort. The wolf’s wound sealed completely, leaving only clean fur behind. His eyes cleared, and he looked up at Lyra with awe. Lyra collapsed backward, dizzy. Kayden caught her instantly, pulling her into his arms. “Lyra! Lyra, look at me.” Her breathing was shallow, her skin pale. “I… didn’t know I could do that.” Kayden cupped her face, his voice shaking. “You saved his life.” Lyra blinked slowly. “It felt… natural.” Mira knelt beside them, eyes wide. “Lyra, that was incredible.” Lyra’s wolf purred weakly. We heal. Kayden held her close, his forehead pressed to hers. “You’re extraordinary. But you can’t drain yourself like that.” Lyra whispered, “I didn’t want him to die.” Kayden’s voice broke. “You’re going to change everything.” Before Lyra could respond, another howl echoed through the forest — this one from Crescent Ridge. Kayden’s expression hardened. “They know. They know what you are.” Lyra’s heart dropped. “They’ll come for me.” Kayden pulled her closer, his voice a vow. “Let them try.” Lyra leaned into him, exhausted but alive, her healing ability humming beneath her skin like a newly awakened star. Shadowpeak had seen her power. Crescent Ridge had sensed it. And the world would never be the same.
