Her First Shift

800 Words
Lyra stood at the edge of Shadowpeak Forest, the moon hanging heavy and full above the treetops. Silver light spilled across the clearing, painting the world in soft luminescence. The air smelled of pine and cool earth, and somewhere in the distance, wolves howled — strong, confident, unafraid. Kayden stood beside her, close enough for warmth but far enough to give her space. His blue eyes glowed faintly in the moonlight, watching her with a mixture of awe and quiet anticipation. “You don’t have to do this tonight,” he said softly. Lyra swallowed hard. “I want to.” Her wolf pressed against her skin, restless and eager. She hadn’t shifted in years — not since Crescent Ridge had beaten her for showing even a hint of strength. She’d buried her wolf so deep she feared she might never see her again. But here, under Shadowpeak’s moon, her wolf felt… safe. Kayden’s voice gentled. “I’ll be right here.” Lyra nodded, her heart pounding. She stepped forward into the clearing, the grass cool beneath her bare feet. Her breath trembled as she closed her eyes. Are you ready? she whispered inwardly. Her wolf answered with a fierce, joyful howl. Lyra exhaled, letting go of every wall she’d built, every fear she’d carried, every lie she’d been forced to believe. Warmth surged through her veins, her bones shifting, her muscles stretching, her skin rippling with power she’d forgotten she possessed. The world blurred. Her heartbeat thundered. And then— Light. Pure, blinding, white light burst from her body, illuminating the clearing like a fallen star. Kayden inhaled sharply, stunned, as the glow intensified, swirling around her like a living aura. When the light faded, a wolf stood where Lyra had been. Not just any wolf. A white wolf. Her fur shimmered like fresh snow, glowing faintly under the moon. Her eyes — storm‑gray and luminous — locked onto Kayden’s with a mixture of fear and pride. Kayden’s breath caught. “Lyra…” White wolves were myths. Legends. Extinct for centuries. Their bloodlines were said to carry ancient magic — scent masking, heightened senses, and healing abilities so powerful they could mend wounds with a touch. But Lyra didn’t know that. Not yet. She lowered her head, trembling, unsure if she should hide or run or simply collapse. Kayden stepped forward slowly, reverently, as if approaching something sacred. “You’re… incredible.” Lyra’s ears flicked back, uncertainty rippling through her. Kayden knelt, his voice barely above a whisper. “You’re the rarest wolf in existence.” Lyra whimpered softly, her tail lowering. She didn’t feel rare. She didn’t feel powerful. She felt exposed — her greatest secret laid bare under the moon. Kayden reached out, offering his hand. “Come here.” Lyra hesitated, then padded forward, her paws silent on the grass. When her nose brushed his palm, warmth surged through her chest. Kayden’s scent wrapped around her — pine, storm, strength — grounding her. “You’re beautiful,” he murmured. Lyra’s wolf pressed against him, seeking comfort. Kayden stroked her fur gently, awe in every movement. “You’ve been hiding this your whole life,” he whispered. “No wonder Crescent Ridge feared you.” Lyra’s wolf flinched at the name. Kayden’s voice hardened. “They don’t get to touch you again.” Lyra leaned into him, her massive white form curling slightly around his legs. Kayden wrapped an arm around her neck, pulling her close. “You’re safe,” he said. “Shift back when you’re ready.” Lyra closed her eyes, letting his voice anchor her. The shift back was easier — softer — like slipping into warm water. Light rippled across her fur, and she rose onto two legs again, breathless and trembling. Kayden caught her before she could fall. Her blonde curls spilled down her back, her gray eyes shimmering with tears. “I didn’t know… I didn’t know she was white.” Kayden cupped her face gently. “Lyra, she’s magnificent.” Lyra shook her head, overwhelmed. “White wolves are extinct.” Kayden’s voice softened. “Not anymore.” Her breath hitched. Kayden brushed a thumb across her cheek. “You’re more powerful than you realize.” Lyra’s voice trembled. “I’m scared.” Kayden pulled her into his arms, holding her close. “Then let me be brave for both of us.” Lyra buried her face in his chest, her tears soaking into his shirt. His arms tightened around her, protective and warm. Under the moonlight, wrapped in Kayden’s embrace, Lyra felt something she hadn’t felt in years. Hope. And deep inside her, her wolf whispered a truth she wasn’t ready to hear: We can heal. We can save. We are more than they ever knew.
