However… “No, Sera!” Mother grabbed my wrist before I could step into the mist. “Let’s go back to the packhouse.” I was young, barely ten, and nestled among the thick fur of her wolf form as she carried me away. I craned my head over my shoulder, casting one last curious glance at the silver fog curling between the trees like beckoning fingers. “Mama, why can’t I go into the woods when the mist is out?” I asked. “Mists are not what they appear to be, Sera,” she gently replied.
