15 Later that night, Orla was snuggling next to Lorcan, trying to sleep, when she sat bolt upright. She thought she’d heard something downstairs. She tried to look into the darkness around her with her dulled vision, but she could see only shadows and vague shapes. She was ready to lie down again, chalking it up to a figment of her imagination, but then she heard it again. It was a faint tapping sound, almost like in the movies where archaeologists tap away at artifacts with tiny hammers and chisels. She reached her hand out to Lorcan, gently shaking his shoulder.
