The next morning, the house was on lockdown.
"Miss Lanny," the head guard said. "No one in or out today."
"Why?"
"Orders from Mr. Moretti."
An hour later, I found out why.
Sarah was at the front gate. Causing a scene.
"Let me see her!" she was screaming. "I’m her friend!"
I watched from the second floor window.
Adrian was already there. In a suit. Calm. Deadly.
"What do you want, Sarah?" he asked.
"I want to talk to Lanny. She’s confused. You’re manipulating her."
Adrian laughed. Once. Cold. "You have 10 seconds to leave before my men remove you."
"You can’t do this!" Sarah yelled. "I know things about you!"
"So do I," Adrian said. "Like how you have 3 open fraud cases. Like how you slept with James for money."
Sarah went pale.
"Last warning," Adrian said.
She looked up at the window. Right at me. And mouthed: `This isn’t over.`
Then she left.
That night, Adrian found me in the library again.
"You okay?" he asked.
"Yeah," I said. "Thank you. For handling it."
He sat next to me. "Lanny. I need to tell you something."
My heart dropped. "What?"
"The marriage. It was supposed to be just business. But..." He trailed off.
"But what?"
"But I don’t want it to be fake anymore."
The room went silent.
I stared at him. "Adrian..."
"I know. It’s the wrong decision," he said, looking away. "But I don’t care."
