It was a delivery order.
When I opened the package, I found a box of contraceptives instead.
Lila Pembroke called moments later.
"I'm so sorry... I accidentally sent the items Dashiell and I use to your new home," she said.
I heard Dashiell's voice in the background. "Lila, come here. Let me check how severe the leakage is now."
The call ended immediately.
My fingernails dug deep into my palms until bright red blood dripped onto the floor.
From our small hometown of Paris, I had truly believed Dashiell and I would make it all the way.
But now, he was sharing even the most intimate parts of his life with another woman.
Numbly, I packed my belongings one by one.
Then my phone buzzed.
I answered, only to hear Mr. Harrington, one of our biggest clients, shouting in fury. "Eulalie! Your team leaked my design files to the public! Knockoff versions are everywhere now! Mark my words, this isn't over!"
My head spun.
I quickly opened the news feed, and the top headline read:
"Renowned Designer Accused of Leading Confidential Client Plans"
My hands shook as I tapped the article and skimmed through the details.
Then I forced myself to calm down.
I built this firm with my own hands. I would not let it be destroyed like this.
Shortly afterward, the office sent over the security footage.
It clearly showed Lila taking photos of the design files and sharing them without authorization.
Our legal team asked how I wanted to proceed.
I took a deep breath. "File a police report and pursue legal action."
At the police precinct, Lila looked at me with swollen, tear-filled eyes. "Please... just let this go. Stop targeting me at work. I'm begging you."
I stepped aside and handed the prepared documents to the investigating officer. "This is exactly what happened. We request a full investigation into this breach of trade secrets."
Lila burst into loud sobs.
I frowned, about to remind her that Dashiell wasn't there to witness her performance.
When he strode through the door.
He placed his hand firmly over the documents I had just given the officer. "We're dropping the case."
I looked him straight in the eye. "Dashiell, do you have any idea how much damage this will do to the company's reputation and business?"
He lowered his gaze to meet mine, his voice calm but firm. "Lila is still young. Don't ruin her future." He pulled out the company's business registration certificate and showed it to the officer. "Officer, I am the registered owner of this company. She is only the general manager I hired. We have decided to withdraw the complaint."
Lila immediately threw herself into Dashiell's arms and cried even harder.
I felt as though I had been plunged into freezing water.
I had forgotten.
I was never the one truly in charge of the company.
Just as Dashiell was never truly mine to begin with.
