Chapter 6

Grill's POV

I let out a slow breath before stepping forward. "Cathrine."

She gave me a small smile, one I remembered all too well.

"It's been a long time, Grill."

"It has."

Neither of us moved for a moment. The people behind her looked exhausted. Some held children, while others carried what few belongings they had left. Their clothes were dirty, and the scent of hunger hung heavily in the air.

My lycan, King, paced uneasily. She didn't come here for you, he growled. Look at them.

"I heard you became an Alpha," Cathrine said quietly. "I wasn't sure if the rumors were true."

"They are."

Her eyes drifted to Ava, who was still standing beside me.

"And this must be your mate."

I smiled without thinking. "Yes. This is Ava, my mate and my Luna."

Ava looked surprised when I introduced her that way, but she didn't pull her hand away.

Cathrine nodded politely. "It's nice to meet you."

"You too," Ava answered softly.

I could tell she was nervous, but she stood tall beside me. "So," I finally asked, "Why are you here?"

Cathrine glanced back at the people behind her.

"Our Alpha was killed during the war. The new Alpha took over, but he only cared about himself. He stopped feeding the elderly, the children... anyone he thought was weak."

Several people lowered their heads. "We stayed as long as we could, but when he started selling pack members to rogues for money..." Her voice cracked. "We ran."

My jaw tightened. "What about the child?"

She looked down at the little boy holding her hand. "This is Noah."

The little boy peeked around her leg with wide brown eyes.

"My grandson."

I blinked.

"Your ?"

She nodded. "My daughter... she didn't make it."

Silence settled over the clearing. "I'm sorry," I said honestly.

She swallowed hard before nodding. "Thank you."

One of my warriors stepped closer. "Alpha?"

I looked over at him. "Get the kitchens started."

His eyes widened. "For everyone?"

"For everyone."

A few gasps came from the crowd. "Prepare the guest houses first. If we run out of room, we'll put up temporary cabins. No one sleeps outside tonight."

The warrior smiled. "Yes, Alpha."

People began crying. Some fell to their knees, thanking the Moon Goddess. Others simply hugged one another. Ava squeezed my hand. When I looked at her, tears filled her eyes.

"You really are giving them a home," she whispered.

I smiled. "I know what it's like to lose everything."

She stepped closer until our shoulders touched. For the first time since she'd arrived, she leaned against me on her own. King purred happily inside me.

“”She's starting to trust us.”

I wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "We'll be okay," I whispered.

Before I could say anything else, one of the guards came sprinting through the clearing.

"Alpha!"

Everyone turned.

He was breathing hard. "We've got another problem."

"What is it?"

"The western border..."

He swallowed. "We found three rogue bodies."

My wolf immediately stood. They weren't killed by wolves.

The guard's face turned pale.

"They looked like something... tore them apart."

A cold feeling settled in my chest. Whatever had done that...

... was still somewhere in my territory.
