Chapter 8 Grill's POV The moment I walked out of my office, my Lycan growled. "She's lying." "I know." "She touched us." "I know that too." There was something about Catherine that didn't sit right with either of us. Every instinct I had was screaming that she was dangerous, but I didn't have any proof. Not yet. As I walked back into the living room, Ava looked up from where she was helping some of the women unfold blankets. The second our eyes met, she smiled. Just like that, the weight on my shoulders disappeared. She walked over and wrapped her arms around my waist. "Everything okay?" she asked softly. I kissed the top of her head. "Yeah. She just wanted to thank me for letting them stay." Ava looked toward the hallway where Catherine had disappeared. "I don't trust her." Neither did I. "I don't, either." She looked back at me. "She kept staring at you." I chuckled. "I only have eyes for you, sweetheart." She smiled, but I could still smell the worry rolling off her. "I know... I just have a bad feeling." I cupped her face. "Then we'll trust your instincts." Before she could answer, one of my guards hurried inside. "Alpha." "What is it?" "The bear has been buried, just like Luna requested." "Good. Make sure nobody goes near that area until we know exactly what happened." "Yes, Alpha." The guard walked away. I turned back to Ava. "Have you eaten yet?" She shook her head. "No. I've been helping everyone settle in." "Then you're eating with me." She laughed. "Yes, Alpha." I smirked. "There she is." As we walked toward the kitchen together, Jax leaned against the doorway with a grin on his face. "So..." I raised an eyebrow. "So?" "You've got yourself a problem." I sighed. "Catherine." He nodded. "I watched her the whole time. She's up to something." "I know." "Want me to keep an eye on her?" "I want guards on her at all times." Jax's smile disappeared. "You think she's dangerous?" "I think she's hiding something." "And the little boy?" I looked over toward the child, playing quietly with a wooden toy another warrior had given him. "He isn't the threat." Jax folded his arms. "The grandmother is." "Exactly." Ava reached for my hand. "I don't like the way she looks at me." That made my Lycan growl. "She sees our mate as an obstacle." I squeezed Ava's hand. "She won't touch you." "You can't promise that." "No." I looked straight into her beautiful eyes. "But I can promise she'll have to go through me first." She leaned against my chest, and I wrapped my arms around her. Across the room, I caught Catherine watching us. The hatred in her eyes lasted only a second before she forced another fake smile. She thought she was playing a game. What she didn't realize... I already knew she was playing. Now, all I had to do was figure out why.
