Chapter 9
Catherine's POV
I listened through the door. I knew they didn't trust me. I knew they suspected I was playing a game; they just didn't know what game I was playing.
RMy son stood beside me. The little one was only five years old. He looked so much like his father. We had to leave. He found out I had been taking money. Well, if he wasn't so tight with it, he wouldn't have kept so much locked away in his safes instead of giving it to his pack.
I had asked him for a thousand dollars to go shopping, and he told me,
"Catherine, if I gave you that much money, what would the pack have? I already give you five hundred every week to spend however you want, but you keep asking for more. You promised to help me take care of this pack."
He always said that. So I started sneaking money. Just a little at first, but then I got greedy and ended up taking over five thousand dollars. He noticed it was missing from the bank and started asking for every receipt whenever I went shopping. When he finally found out I had stolen the money, he completely lost it. He told me to leave... but to leave our son behind.
I waited until he left for a meeting away from the pack house. That was when I made my move. I hurried to pack our things and took our son with me. I stayed hidden in the shadows, making sure he would never find us.
Now that we were back here, and he was still in Japan, there was no way he would ever think to look for me here.
I looked into the office where Grill and Ava were still inside. He was holding her, and it made my blood boil. The moment he glanced toward me, I forced a soft smile onto my face.
Maybe it was a little too fake. I had to be careful. If I wanted access to the safes, I first had to figure out how to earn their trust. I already had an idea. I just needed to plan everything carefully.
Then I could get rid of her. She didn't belong here. She never would.
I stepped away from the office door with my son. We were carrying blankets and pillows, unsure where we would be sleeping, when one of the guards walked over to us.
"Ma'am, if you'll follow me, I'll show you where you and this little man will be staying."
I nodded and followed him. He led us outside to a small cabin. From the outside it looked tiny, but when we stepped inside, I was surprised by how spacious it was.
"This cabin has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The bedrooms are side by side, and there's a connecting door to your son's room so you can check on him whenever you need to. Your bedroom is soundproof... just in case you ever have company."
"Sir, I'm single. There won't be any company."
He nodded before saying, "My name is Chris. You don't have to call me sir. If you ever need anything fixed around the house, just give me a call."
He wrote his phone number on a piece of paper and handed it to me before turning and leaving us alone. I picked my son up in my arms and carried him toward the bedrooms. Tonight, he will sleep with me. Tomorrow... he could sleep in his own room.
