Chapter 2
It was around two in the morning when I finally got home. There had been a little traffic, but that was about it. I only had five hours before I needed to be up again.
Walking into my house, I headed straight for the shower, washing the female scent off of me. But no matter how hard I tried, my Lycan couldn't stop thinking about her.
"It's been a while, Grill. Maybe she's the one we've been looking for."
I rolled my eyes. He said that every single time I hooked up with someone. Maybe she's the one. After Cathrine rejected me years ago, I swore I'd only settle down if I ever found my second chance. That hadn't happened yet.
After my shower, I turned the water off and dried myself. I barely wore anything around the house. I lived alone, so why bother? Half the time I walked around naked anyway. Climbing into bed, I quickly fell asleep. I ended up dreaming about the woman I'd spent the night with.
Damn... I would've loved a second round with her. She was fun.
Morning came far too soon. My phone alarm kept blaring. "Shit..."
I might as well get up. I had patrol today. I pulled on a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. Honestly, what was the point of wearing clothes? They were just going to rip off the second I shifted anyway.
A mindlink came through, and I opened it.
"Grill, after patrol, come see me in my office. We have things to talk about."
I shook my head. I hoped this wasn't about having my own pack again. I'd told Jax no more times than I could count, but he refused to give up.
"Alright. Give me a few hours and I'll be there. I've got to run the borders first. You know how long that takes."
Cutting off the link, I headed outside, disappeared into the woods, and shifted into my Lycan. I started with the western border, then moved north before finishing the rest of the territory. Along the way I dealt with a few rogues, stopped to talk with some pack members, and even ran with the patrol runners for a while.
I kept trying to think of excuses not to go see Jax. But my patrol was finished, and I knew I had to. Not only was he a Don, but he was also my Alpha. My duties came first. Heading toward the entrance of the territory, I found the emergency clothes we'd stashed in one of the trees. The shorts fit fine, but the shirt was at least a size too small. Barely.
I decided to just go shirtless instead, tossing the shirt back into the tree before making my way to the Alpha's office. Walking inside, I dropped into one of the chairs.
"Alright, man, I'm here. What's up? Do we need to make a trip to collect money... or hurt someone?"
Smirking, Jax shook his head before sitting behind his desk.
"Grill, you already know what this is about. We've been talking for months about you starting your own pack. Building something that's yours."
I sighed. "Listen, Jax. We're best friends. We grew up together. We built this pack together. How am I supposed to leave the only place I've ever called home? The answer is still no."
He laughed. Then he shocked the hell out of me.
"Well... that might change when I tell you I've already started building your pack."
I blinked. "What?"
"The packhouse is finished. The cabins and houses behind it are done too. The stables already have horses, and I've hired people to cook, clean, and keep everything running until you get settled. I know you'll have wolves wanting to join you. I've watched you talk to lone wolves for years. They're waiting for you, Grill."
He leaned back in his chair. "Everything else should be finished in about six months, which gives you plenty of time to decide how you want to run things."
Well...Damn. How was I supposed to say no now? He'd already been building everything behind my back.
I let out a long sigh. "Alright... fine."
A grin spread across Jax's face.
"But I'm going out tonight. If this is my last night as a free man, I'm going to have some fun."
Jax burst out laughing. "You're still going to be a free man. Do whatever you want until you find your second chance."
He grabbed a piece of paper, scribbled something down, and slid it across the desk. "This is the address to your new place. It's only about an hour away, so we'll still see each other all the time. Go have your fun tonight. I'll see you tomorrow."
Taking the paper from him, I nodded. Then I headed home, took another quick shower, got dressed, and prepared to head back to the club.
After getting cleaned up, I stood in front of the mirror, running a hand through my hair.
"Damn, I look good."
My Lycan snorted. "Cocky bastard."
"I'm not cocky. I'm confident."
"Keep telling yourself that."
Chuckling, I grabbed my keys and wallet before heading out the front door. The ride to the club only took about thirty minutes. The music could already be heard from outside as people filled the parking lot. Same place. Same crowd. Just another night. At least that's what I thought.
Parking my bike, I climbed off and made my way toward the entrance.
"Grill!" one of the bouncers called out.
I nodded at him. "Busy tonight?"
"You have no idea," he laughed. "Everybody wants to celebrate the end of the war."
"I don't blame them."
Walking inside, the bass from the speakers shook the floor beneath my feet. The club was packed shoulder to shoulder. Wolves, bears, vampires, even a few witches were scattered throughout the crowd.
Everyone was trying to forget the bloodshed for one night. I headed straight for the bar.
"Whiskey," I told the bartender.
He slid the glass over, and I tossed him a few bills. Leaning against the bar, I slowly sipped my drink while watching everyone dance.
"She's here."
I frowned. "What are you talking about?"
"Mate."
I nearly choked on my whiskey. "Don't start."
"I'm serious."
I rolled my eyes. "You've been wrong before."
"Not this time."
Before I could answer him, a sweet scent drifted through the club.
Vanilla. Wildflowers. Rain. Every muscle in my body locked up.
My Lycan shot to his feet inside my mind.
"MATE!"
The glass slipped from my fingers, shattering on the floor.
I wasn't even paying attention. All I could think about was that scent.
It was driving me insane. Without another thought, I pushed through the crowd, ignoring the annoyed growls and curses from everyone I bumped into. The scent grew stronger. Closer. My heart pounded against my chest.
"She's close."
I turned the corner toward the VIP section. Then… Time stopped.
Standing near the hallway was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen…Long hair…Bright eyes. A smile that could bring any man to his knees.
The second our eyes met, everything around us disappeared.
The music. The people. The noise. None of it mattered. Only her.
She looked just as shocked as I felt. Our eyes stayed locked together. Neither of us moved. Neither of us breathed.
Then my Lycan whispered the words I'd waited years to hear.
"Second chance..."
