Chapter 34
Tony POV
The warning howl echoed through the pack before I was even out of the office. Warriors were already sprinting across the courtyard, shifting as they ran toward the eastern border. Alpha Grill didn't waste a second.
"Sound the alarm!" he ordered. "Every warrior to the eastern border! Healers, stay behind the second line! No one fights alone!"
"Yes, Alpha!"
The entire pack erupted into organized chaos. I looked over at Catherine.
"You stay here."
Her eyes widened. "I can fight."
"I didn't ask." "I gave you an order."
For a brief second, I saw anger flash across her face before she forced a smile. "Of course."
I knew that look. She was planning something. I leaned close enough that only she could hear me. "If you disobey me..."I'll personally lock you in a cell."
She lowered her eyes. "Yes, Alpha."
Whether she meant it or not remained to be seen. I turned to my warriors.
"Half of you protect the packhouse. The other half comes with me."
Within seconds, we were running.
As we reached the eastern border, dozens of rogues stood just beyond the tree line. They weren't growling. They weren't snarling.
They were... Waiting. Alpha Grill slowed beside me. "Something's wrong."
"I know."
No rogue pack had this much discipline. Not unless someone was controlling them, then every rogue stepped aside at the exact same time. A woman emerged from the shadows. Long black hair.
Pale skin. Eyes as red as fresh blood. She smiled.
"So...I finally get to meet the famous Alpha Grill."
I could feel the power rolling off her. Ancient. Dangerous. Vampire.
Grill stepped forward.
"You've crossed into my territory."
She laughed softly. "Territory is such a meaningless word."
Her crimson eyes shifted past him. Looking directly toward the packhouse. Toward Ava.
"I didn't come for you, I came for her."
A murderous growl ripped from Grill's chest. "You'll never touch my mate."
The vampire smiled wider. "Oh... I think I will."
She raised one elegant hand. Instantly, every rogue charged. The ground shook beneath hundreds of pounding feet.
"Attack!" Grill roared.
The battlefield exploded into violence. Wolves collided with rogues.
Claws tore through flesh. Growls and screams filled the night air.
I shifted mid-run, my wolf taking over as I slammed into the first rogue. Bones snapped beneath my jaws. Another rogue lunged from the side.
I spun and tore out its throat. Blood sprayed across the grass.
Out of the corner of my eye, I searched for the vampire. She wasn't fighting. She was watching. Waiting. Then... She smiled at someone behind me.
I turned. My heart nearly stopped. Catherine. She was standing at the edge of the battlefield. She had disobeyed my direct order.
The vampire gave her the smallest nod. Almost too subtle to notice.
But I saw it. My blood ran cold. No… They knew each other.
Before I could reach Catherine, a massive rogue crashed into me, knocking me backward. As I fought it off, I looked up just in time to see Catherine quietly slipping away from the battlefield... following the vampire into the darkness.
