Chapter 35
Hesu Vampire Mistress POV
They had no idea I had come for Catherine. She had wanted to see whether Tony would let her fight, but instead, he had threatened to throw her back into the cells if she disobeyed him. While everyone was distracted by the battle, she quietly slipped out of the house. She wanted Tony to see her leaving with me. From this moment on, she would be with us.
I had already told the others that Catherine could still be useful.
The woman we served had once shared a bed with Alpha Grill. She wanted him for herself, and she wanted Ava out of the way. What she didn't understand was that Ava possessed powers far beyond anything she imagined.
I wanted Ava, too. The only way to reach her was to use Catherine.
If Tony and the others were busy searching for Catherine, they wouldn't be watching Ava. They would leave openings, and when they did... we would take her.
Catherine had agreed to the plan. She wanted Ava gone just as badly as she did. She had also promised me half of the stolen money once everything was over. It was a fair bargain.
Once we were far enough from the pack, Catherine suddenly stopped walking.
"Listen," she said. "If I know Tony, and I know him well, he'll think I've betrayed him. He'll come looking for me. It'll take him a day or two, but he'll find me."
She looked me directly in the eyes. "I need you... or the rogues... to beat me. Beat me until I can barely move. Break my arm. Break my nose. Leave me barely alive. I'll crawl out of the cave, and that's when Tony will find me."
I stared at her. "Catherine... are you insane? If rogues attack you like that, they may kill you before anyone gets there. Even I may not be able to stop myself. I could lose control and feed on you."
A wicked smile spread across her bruised lips. "Good. That's exactly what I want."
She glanced into the distance, listening to Tony's mind-link.
"He'll lose his mind if he sees me like that. He'll hunt every rogue he can find. Alpha Grill will probably join him. They'll be too busy chasing rogues to protect Ava." She closed her eyes.
"I can feel Tony trying to mind-link me now." A moment later, his furious voice echoed through the bond.
"Catherine! When I find you, I'll kill you myself! You betrayed me! You betrayed this pack!"
She allowed me to hear every word before opening her eyes again.
"Do it now," she whispered. "I'll send him images while they're beating me. He'll believe every second of it."
I sighed. This woman truly was dangerous. I raised my hand toward the rogues. "Beat her until she can't stand."
Without hesitation, they obeyed. The first punch split her lip. The second broke her nose. A boot slammed into her ribs. Another snapped her arm with a sickening crack. She screamed, but she never begged them to stop.
By the time they finished, she couldn't even lift her head. She would survive. After all, I carried vampire blood. If I gave her only a few drops, she'd heal... but very slowly. Just enough to keep her alive until Tony found her. Exactly as she wanted.
Catherine POV
I knew exactly what I was doing. Every punch… Every kick… Every broken bone...It all served a purpose. As the rogues beat me, I opened the mind-link with Tony. I pushed every image into his mind.
The torn clothes. The blood. The boots crashing into my ribs.
The agony.
"Tony..." I cried through the bond. "Please... I didn't betray you... Help me... They're hurting me..."
Another kick shattered my arm. I screamed, making sure he felt every ounce of my pain. "Please... don't leave me here..."
His answer came almost instantly. "Catherine... stay alive. I'm coming for you."
Perfect. A smile almost escaped my lips despite the pain. The final blow nearly knocked me unconscious. Hesu hurried over. She sank her fangs into my neck just long enough to leave convincing wounds before pulling away.
Then, she forced a small amount of her blood between my lips.
Just enough. Enough to keep me alive. Not enough to turn me.
"Catherine..." Hesu whispered. "I can't leave you like this. There are far worse things than me in these woods."
"Go," I rasped.
"If you want Ava... this is the only chance you'll get. Don't let Tony find you here."
For just a second... She actually looked worried. How foolish. Maybe in another life we could have been sisters. But not this one. She vanished so quickly only a faint breeze remained. I dragged myself toward the cave entrance. Every inch felt impossible. Blood soaked the dirt beneath me.
Finally… Sunlight. I pulled myself forward one last time before collapsing onto the ground. Please...Find me. My vision blurred. Then I heard it. Paws pounding across the forest floor. A furious roar echoed through the trees. Bones cracked. Rogues screamed.
Then...Tony's voice. "Oh, Goddess... Catherine! What did they do to you?"
Everything went black. I didn't know how long I had been unconscious. When I finally opened my eyes, the first thing I heard was the constant beeping of machines. The sound drilled into my skull.
My throat burned. I needed water.
"She's awake!" someone shouted. "Go get Tony! Hold on, Catherine. He only stepped out for a minute."
The door burst open. Tony rushed inside carrying a folded blanket.
The moment he reached my bedside, he gently wrapped it around me before taking my hand.
"Catherine... honey... how are you feeling?"
His voice shook. "You're healing faster now. Just a few more days and you'll be completely recovered."
This...This was the Tony I wanted. Focused only on me. Not Ava.
Not Grill. Me. I just hoped Hesu had escaped.
If she had been captured, someone would have already told me.
Good. Everything was working. My voice came out weak.
"It... it was rogues..."
Fresh tears rolled down my cheeks. "I didn't want to leave, Tony... she made me... then they attacked me."
I let myself sob. "I'm so sorry... Please forgive me..."
He gently brushed my hair away from my face. "You don't have anything to apologize for."
Perfect.. I glanced around the room.
"Where's Alpha Grill... and Luna Ava? They weren't hurt... were they?"
Tony shook his head. "No, baby. They're both out on patrol. Grill was furious when I found you. Whoever did this almost killed you."
He squeezed my hand. "Did they tell you why they attacked you?"
I slowly shook my head. "N-no..." I lowered my eyes, forcing another shiver through my body. "They... they said they wanted to have some fun..." My voice cracked. "And then... they did this."
I clutched the blanket tighter. "I'm scared to be alone. When I close my eyes..." I let another tear fall....I still see them hurting me."
Tony pulled me gently into his arms. "It's over now," he whispered.
"I promise you...No one will ever hurt you again."
I buried my face against his chest, hiding the satisfied smile that threatened to appear. Everything was falling into place. While Tony's attention remained on me… No one would see the real danger closing in on Ava.
